A Holistic Approach to Health and Wellness

Eating Clean

Are you tired of feeling as if there is something more to you then what everyone, including yourself see’s. Yet you just cannot seem to grasp exactly what it is or how to bring it out.

Recently, I had the pleasure of interviewing a Certified Holistic Health Coach, Courtney Hermann, who can help you bring out the person you most want to be, naturally. Just take a look at what a couple of Courtney’s clients had to say about her and her approach to wellness within

“Working with Courtney has been wonderful. Her Holistic approach was finally what I needed to get a hold of my overall health. She is very patient, and has great ideas to help you to figure out what fits your lifestyle. She not only looks at your eating habits, but takes the time to look at your life as a whole. I needed to figure out why I eat the way I do before I could change the way I eat.”

“There really is so much more to being healthy than just working out hard. Thank you for opening my eyes to it all. I can’t wait to see what’s next.”

Working with Courtney is truly a partnership in health, and her ideas are ones that will stay with me a lifetime. I am so happy I found her, and her approach, and would recommend her to anyone. Even though she is miles away, I can always get a hold of her when I need her. It doesn’t matter where you live, if you are looking to finally figure out how to live a health lifestyle, I would contact Courtney today!”

In the next few minutes, you will meet Courtney and learn what it is she does that will bring you to the place that everyone should be in their life. If you can sit down and think about how much you wish your life was different, or how you wish you could be someone else, other than yourself, then I recommend that you give Courtney a call immediately. There is no one else you need to be but yourself, having someone help you find the you, that you want to be is all you need. That is what Courtney will do.

Let me introduce Courtney Herman and her Holistic Approach To Health & Wellness :

What is your name? Courtney Hermann

What are your qualifications? I received my training to be Certified Holistic Health Coach at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition. I am a Board Certified Member of the American Association of Drugless Practitioners. I have a Bachelor of Science Degree in Kinesiology with a Wellness Concentration.

What are you trying to accomplish by offering your services to the public? Other than being successful. For anyone that has struggled with dieting, they understand how hard it is to not let food consume their life. I want people to understand the concept of “we eat to live, not live to eat!” The Health and Wellness Industry has become a billion dollar industry because of all these different diet books with the author claiming that, “this is the diet that actually works.” There is no one diet that works for everyone because every “body” is different. My services offer a lifestyle change that includes learning to deal with the stresses that come with our everyday lives. Stress gets in the way of us achieving our health goals and forces us to think we don’t have enough time to dedicate to ourselves. I want everyone to know that there is a way to overcome any struggles that they have had with their weight, and it starts with understanding why they eat the way they do, why they crave certain foods at certain times, and what it is that they can do to accomplish their goals.

What is the name and address of your website? CourtneyHermannWellness.com

What services do you offer? * 6-month Program (2 sessions/month for 6 months) * 3-month Fast Track Program (4 sessions/month for 3 months) * Pay as you go Individual Consultations

Who do you offer your consulting to? I would say my target market is busy people who need help integrating healthy eating habits without adding more stress to their already stressful lives. I honestly feel like I offer something for everyone that struggles with what they should eat each day and can’t seem to figure it out.

Is there an age limit to who you can help? No. For teens under 18, still living at home I would probably need to involve their parents so they can all be in agreement for what needs to be done.

Where are you located? Redondo Beach, Ca

Do you offer services throughout the United States or in one specific area? People that live in the South Bay area are able to come to my office to meet in person but I offer my services over the phone to people all over the US. I send all of their handouts through email and send packages to them whenever I need to.

Do clients have to come in to see you, or are there other alternatives? We can talk over the phone

What exactly is a “holistic” approach? A holistic approach just means that I look at the “Big Picture” of what’s going on in someone’s life. I don’t just focus on food, what’s good and what’s bad. I look at what’s contributing to someone gaining weight or what’s getting in the way of not letting someone lose unwanted weight. Is being stressed out at work or a lack of energy making them feel that they just don’t have the time to prepare meals themselves or be physically active. I work with my clients to get through these issues and find ways to cope with them to achieve more balance in their lives.

“Health Coach”, explain what that means. For a coach that coaches sports teams, they can’t play the game for their players. They need to teach them the basics, keep them progressing, and help their players work on certain skills and enforce a positive attitude in order for their players to be successful. In my case, the players are my clients. What my clients put in is what they get out of my programs. I am there to support them, cheer them on, give them all the basic tools they need, and most importantly, hold them accountable for what they choose to do but in a respectful and supportive manner.

Is there a difference between “health coach” and “diet consultant”? If so, what are they? I am not 100% sure what a Diet Consultant does but I think I offer more than just “Here’s what you should be eating, now eat it.” I work with my clients to figure out why they eat the way they do and what things have contributed to them failing diets in the past. I want to make it clear that my clients are not put on a diet or given a strict meal plan. I introduce new foods to them, different ways of cooking them, and gradually eliminate or reduce the foods that are not so good for their health. I enforce eating clean foods, free of artificial ingredients and chemicals, and do my best to find healthy alternatives to the foods that my clients have craved in the past.

If someone wanted you to explain what you do, without using medical terms, What would you tell them? Whether you want to lose weight, increase your energy, reduce stress, or find a way to get in more physical activity, I am there every step of the way to keep you motivated and hold you accountable. I will work with you to discover the food and lifestyle choices that best support you, making gradual, lifelong changes that will enable you to reach you current and future health goals. Everyone wants to feel confident in choosing and preparing better food for themselves and their loved ones and I can help you do that!

Everyone has one specific reason they start something. What one thing inspired you to open your own health & nutrition business? I never really struggled with food or gaining weight until I was a freshman in college. Growing up, I was always able to eat whatever I wanted and never had a problem with gaining weight. I was a tiny kid and my mom would basically force feed me so I would gain some weight. I never really thought about having to eat healthy because it really didn’t apply to me at the time. When I got to college, I was overwhelmed with balancing my classes and soccer practices, as I was on the women’s soccer team and had practice everyday and games on the weekends. I wasn’t even concerned with what I was eating because it was never a problem before. Slowly but surely I started to gain weight and by winter break I had gained 15 pounds! It was like I didn’t even notice my weight gain until I took a break from everything and went home. I tried focusing more on my eating habits when I went back to school but it felt almost impossible with unlimited access to the dining commons and my terrible mindset of “everyone else can eat whatever they want, why can’t I?” Anyway, I went home for summer weighing 25 lbs heavier than when I entered college, was bloated, swollen and felt extremely unhealthy and depressed. Remember, I played soccer every single weekday in the off-season, and I still managed to gain 25 lbs. This told me that my eating habits really had to change. Since I had no clue what to do, I went to see a nutritionist at a wellness center in Santa Monica. To make a long story short, it completely changed my life! I started cooking all my food that summer, paid close attention to my portions, hired an amazing trainer to get me back in shape, and lost 15 pounds that summer! I was already a Kinesiology major in college and planned to go into physical therapy or athletic training. After my experience, I decided I wanted to choose a career where I could help people who struggle with the same issues that I once did. I changed my concentration to “wellness” that next semester and convinced myself that this is what I would do for a living. After graduating from college I enrolled in the Distance Learning program at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition, which was the best decision I ever made. I absolutely loved my classes and speakers and took away so much valuable information that I can now share with my clients! I am hoping that I can soon open a wellness center that offers personal training, exercise classes, massage therapy, and of course, Health Coaching!

If I were to sign up for your program, what exactly does that entitle? During the course of the program you will: Set and accomplish goals Explore new, delicious foods Understand and reduce cravings Increase energy Feel better in your body Improve other areas of your life that have been neglected The Program includes: Two 45-50 minute sessions/month for 6 months (Four sessions/month for 3 month program) Total of 12 sessions. Email support between sessions. Handouts and recipes. Food samples, books, CDs, and self-care products. A lending library of Health and Wellness Books.

Let’s say that you get a client who has been struggling with weight issues their entire life. Diets have not worked for them. How do you approach the disbelief that they could have by trying out your program? My Program is not a diet! My client and I would work together to figure out why they have failed diets in the past and why they have struggled with weight their whole life. There is a reason behind everything, you can’t just say “this diet didn’t work for me” or “I just can’t lose weight”. There are underlying reasons why something didn’t work for them and it is my job to understand why and help them overcome it or try a different approach. My holistic approach is what I believe is the reason why my program works. I like to say that I am a mix between a nutritionist and a life coach because I still help you make the right food choices but I also focus on all the other aspects of your life that could be contributing to you doing things such as over-eating, bingeing, craving sweets or salty foods and being extremely consumed with wanting to lose weight. In order to be healthy, and lose weight if that is a specific health concern, you have to maintain balance in every aspect of your life. My main program is 6-months because that is a significant amount of time to keep someone on track and hold them accountable. Again, what someone puts in is what they get out. I can’t play the game for them but I can be their biggest cheerleader and support them all the way through.

All it takes is that first step to begin to feel better about yourself and your life that you live. If not anything, give Courtney a call or even an email. It might just be the push you need to a happy, healthier, you !

Knowing yourself is the beginning of all wisdom.
