Rachael Ray’s Dog Treats: A Product Review

Dachshunds, Dog Treats, Pet Nutrition

Last year Rachael Ray introduced her pet food company and products to the world. They have been primarily a big success, whether from her name being easily recognized or her advertising campaign that promoted “healthy” products on television and print ads.

Rachael’s Peanut Butter Treats come in a lime green bag with a re-sealable Ziploc closure. On the front is a picture of Rachael and her dog and a pile of the Isaboo Booscotti Crunchy Dog Treats. On the back of the bag is her motto, “Nourish, love, protect”.

Ray’s products are made with commitment to making great tasting treats that dogs will love. She goes as far as offering a full refund in the purchase price to any dog or person who is not satisfied with the purchase.

My Thoughts on Isaboo Booscotti Peanut Butter Flavor Dog Treats

These treats are shaped like little bite size round disks about ½ inch in thickness. They are a perfect size for treats for rewards in training pets or for using as a daily treat. They are a light cardboard color and don’t look especially appealing. They also do not have any scent to them.

I’ve given Rachel’s Isaboo Booscotti Peanut Butter Treats to our miniature dachshunds and to our spaniel and they have all received them with pleasure and gobbled them down. It took the dachshunds about two minutes to chew them up and beg for more, where as the spaniel gulped them down in one bite. All of my dogs love and expect treats and I haven’t found many that they will turn their noses up to.

I was expecting a bit more out of the nutrition department from Rachael Ray, but overall the ingredients are not the worst I have ever seen and are not bad. They do leave room for some improvement in the way of giving a protein source from real meat and not grains or meals. I do question the fact of peanuts being listed in the ingredients since a lot of humans have allergies, although I’m not sure if this is the same for canines or not. This is a question for my vet! Also, with all the scares of contaminated peanuts in factories across the United States, this ingredient makes me a little nervous being served to my pets.

I also wondered about the peanut butter flavor of the treats? Peanut butter is not listed, so I’m assuming the flavor comes directly from the peanuts or is it from the “natural flavor” listed in the ingredients? And wouldn’t the natural flavor be peanut butter? I’d rather just see the pure facts and not any misleading or mysterious statements when it comes to ingredient listings.

Another thing I noticed about Isaboo Booscotti Peanut Butter Treats was that the shelf life of the product was quite short. My bag of treats was stamped with an expiration date of August 12, 2009. I purchased the treats in March of 2009. This is a pretty short shelf life in my opinion.

Would I Recommend Isaboo Booscotti Peanut Butter Treats?

Like I said before, these treats are not the worst treats on the market. There are many more that are far worse, and they are not the best either. There is plenty of room for improvement here and if Rachel wants to advertise pet treats that are healthy and nutritious, she should step up and bring the ingredients up to a better standard. I rate Isaboo Booscotti Peanut Butter Treats as above average with room for improvement.
