Jackie Warner, Harley Pasternak and More Celeb Trainers Share Shape-Up Tips for Summer

Fitness Advice, Jackie Warner, Warmup

Summer 2012 is officially here! While we’re loving the hotter temps, we’re worried about getting our jiggly bits in shape for our swimsuits. Luckily, we’re never without tons of fitness advice from today’s top celebrity trainers. Celebs like Jennifer Aniston, Pink and Megan Fox dole out thousands for personal training, but we have some of their expensive tips right here. You’re welcome.

Jackie Warner

Reality television fans might know Jackie Warner from her controversial Bravo show “Work Out” that chronicled Warner’s work at her gym Sky Sport and Spa. Warner also trains celebrity clients like Alanis Morissette.

To shape up your abs for the summer, Warner says to stay away from crunches.

“They’re the slowest way to actually build the abdominals,” the trainer told SheKnows in May. “You need to really be working the upper, lower and the obliques. I like doing crunch-free abdominal work.”

What is crunch-free abdominal work? It doesn’t mean you get to sit on the couch. Instead, focus on training with weights.

“Better than any crunches or sit-ups, a regular ‘man-style’ push-up or squat is the best way to get good abdominals,” she said.

Gunnar Peterson

Gunnar Peterson’s roster of clients includes a who’s who of Hollywood. He’s counted Angelina Jolie and Jennifer Lopez as clients, as well as gym hating “Modern Family” star Sofia Vergara.

If you’re like Vergara and hate to work out, Peterson recommends shortening your workout to about 40 minutes. “Five minutes for a warmup, 30 minutes for a workout, and five
minutes for a stretch and a cooldown. By the end, that’s 40 minutes,”
he told Shape.com recently. “You really don’t have 40 minutes? The President is far
busier than you, Kim Kardashian is far busier than you, and she can make
time. It’s about prioritizing.”

He advises clients like Vergara to break up their routines with other fun activities like biking and Pilates. Oh, and clean eating is a big portion of the fitness equation – Peterson tells clients to avoid sugar, alcohol and carbs later in the day.

Sadly, that’s precisely the time we want to have sugar, alcohol and carbs.

Harley Pasternak

Hollywood couple Megan Fox and Brian Austin Green is two of trainer Harley Pasternak’s high-profile clients – he trains them several times a week. Pasternak admitted he tries to keep the workouts brief because Fox hates to work out.

To keep the workouts short, “The Revolution” host does a cardio warmup with deadlifts, bent-over rows and ab work.

“The problem a lot of women make is they over-train the front of their abs,” Pasternak said recently. “There’s too much strength there and not enough in the spinal area.”

The key to stave off workout boredom? Be sure to switch up the workouts every day.

Neda Soderqvist

Trainer Neda Soderqvist isn’t like other Hollywood trainers – she actually recommends that her clients find something fun instead of strenuous. Her thought process behind that recommendation is that people will actually stick with workout programs they enjoy.

You have to love the workout you choose to do! I recommend people find a workout partner or participate in group classes,” she told Shape.com recently.
