Located at the busy intersection of 71st St. and Memorial Dr. in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Gold’s Gym is a popular workout destination for many Tulsans. Gold’s offers a large variety of workout options, from free weights to machines to classes. Personal trainer are always floating around, if you need some extra guidance. Open nearly 24 hours a day, you can work a session in at Gold’s whenever you have a few minutes to spare.

Upon entering Gold’s Gym, you are immediately thrown into the workout world. Gold’s lobby features a Smoothie Bar, where visitors can purchase various protein drinks or smoothies. The lobby also features several racks of retail items, including tees, pants & shorts, gym bags and nutritional supplements. After checking in at the front desk, you head back into the fitness area, where a wide variety of equipment is visible. But first, let’s head to the locker rooms. The locker rooms at Gold’s are clean and well taken care of. They offer lockers for single day usage, individual showers and plenty of restrooms. Additionally, the Ladies’ Room features a mirrored vanity room, complete with small hairdryers and plenty of counter space. Perfect for getting yourself put back together after your workout.

Out on the main floor, you’re ready to start your workout. Gold’s offers rows and rows of weight lifting machines, there are machines for nearly every muscle you want to work. Further down, you will find the cable machines. There are several sections for seated rows, lat pull-downs, pulleys, and pull ups. Behind the weight and cable machines, there are several more rows of cardio equipment. There are several televisions hanging near the cardio machines, with varying programs shown to appeal to most audiences. Iin the back corner, you will find the free weights area. This area includes dumbbells, benches, squat racks, bench presses, Smith machines, and more. This area is surrounded by mirrors, so you can ensure you are using proper technique. Finally, back by the lobby, Gold’s has built a floor area, where they provide stability balls, medicine balls, foam rollers, etc. This area is designed for stretching, sit-ups, and other floor work you may want to perform.

Gold’s also offers various specialty areas. First, there is the Mind & Body Studio, where classes including Yoga and Pilates are taught. Right next door, you will find the Women’s Only area, which offers a few pieces of cardio equipment, lighter free weights, plenty of open space, and accessories such as stability balls, mats, barbells, and benches. Though not very big, this space offers privacy for women. Additionally, the Women’s area connects directly to the Women’s locker room. Around the corner, you will find the basketball court and pool areas. In addition to the pool, Gold’s has a hot tub for sore muscles. Turn the corner again and you will find the cycle studio, main class studio (for Zumba, Turbo Kick, Body Pump, etc), and Cardio Cinema, where you can get a cardio workout in while watching the featured movie. This movie changes frequently, so you can stay motivated and interested.

Clearly, Gold’s has a lot of top-notch features. One of my favorite aspects of Gold’s is all of the unique accessories they provide. Some examples include a web-like stretching apparatus, an ab wheel and kettlebells, All of these items make your workout more interesting, and easier to include variety. Variety is also a strong point for Gold’s Cardio area. You will find the typical machines- treadmills, bikes (upright and recumbent) and several types of ellipticals. Gold’s also provides several types of stairmaster machines, rowing machines and hand ergometers. One of the biggest drawback, however, is the size of the free weights area. The three enclosed walls are lined with equipment, leaving little room in the middle to train. I always try to go during a non-peak times, as this area fills up quickly and it can be a challenge to find a free squat rack. The cable machines also get fairly busy, but visitors are usually friendly and don’t mind sharing equipment.
