Learn the Effects of Fad Diets

>It is said that some 54 million people are on a diet as we speak. The good news is that some people are starting to care about their health and their weight. The bad news is that most of them are following the latest fads in dieting. Those same people are not realizing the dangers of fad diets. There are many negative effects of fad diets. We will talk about them, and hopefully, after reading this article, you will be able to know when a diet is not healthy for you, either physically, or emotionally.

A diet that eliminates refined and processed sugar and carbohydrates

One of the diets on the market encourages you to eliminate refined and processed sugar and carbohydrates. What you are allowed to eat are whole grains, high fiber fruits and vegetables, and no restriction on protein from lean meat. This diet also states when you wash down your food with any liquids the results are partially digested foods. The effects of fad diets such as this are that the rise in blood sugar levels does not encourage your body to store fat. This diet is lacking in some major vitamins and minerals. This includes calcium, vitamin A, and fiber.

A diet restricting carbohydrate intake

This diet will only allow your carbohydrate intake to be 20 grams per day at first. You are than allowed to build up to 60 grams per day. You are limited to the kinds of food you are allowed to have that are healthy for you. You are allowed to eat things like meat, fish, chicken, eggs, vegetable oil, bacon and butter. You are not allowed to eat fruits, vegetables, pasta, bread, milk, and yogurt. The negative effects for this diet include the lack of a balanced diet, high amounts of saturated fats, fats, and cholesterol. There is also a chance of dehydration if large amounts of water are not consumed. This diet also lacks calcium, magnesium, potassium, vitamin C, and folate.

The ads are everywhere

You can find the advertisements for the same kind of diets like those two listed above everywhere you look. These ads are plastered all over every kind of media you can think of. They give you all kinds of promises of how much weight you will lose in a very short amount of time. What they do not tell you is the whole truth. The rest of the ad needs to read something like the following statement. This diet may produce weight loss, until you are forced to off it because of the lack of proper nutrition. Once you have gone off this diet, you will gain most of your weight back when you start eating regular food again.

Another one of the effects of fad diets is that when you do go off the diet and gain your weight back, you may either get discouraged, depressed, or start another fad diet. Either way it is not healthy for you either physically or mentally.

Know before you buy

Knowing what diets are healthy and which are not may be a challenge at times. Here are a few tips that might help you along.

If the diet claims that, you will be able to take off more than one or more pounds a week you may be losing weight too fast. A slow loss of weight is a better guarantee that you will be able to keep the weight off.

If the diet only allows you to eat certain foods, forces you to eat certain food combinations, or has rigid and inflexible menu plans, you may not be getting a balance of proper nutrition.

If your diet states that you can lose lots of weight without any exercising or other changes in your life, it is not going to be very good for you. If it sounds too good to be true, it is.

If there is one thing that most medical professionals can agree on is that the effects of fad diets are mostly negative effects. The best way to lose the weight and keep it off is to eat less, eat healthier, and keep physically active.
