10 Wholesome Foods at a Steak House

Benihana, Outback, Outback Steakhouse, Steak Houses

The other day I was craving a blooming onion from Outback Steakhouse. It’s one of those items that I know is bad for me but I want it anyway. However, eating at a steakhouse does not have to be an unhealthy occasion. Here are ten healthy options when ordering at a steakhouse.

Ahi Tuna

The Small Ahi Tuna “Aussie-tizer” at Outback Steakhouse has 165.7 calories per serving. In addition, it has only 1.2g of saturated fat and 9.2 grams of protein. This appetizer has two servings for sharing. According to Puritan.com, ahi tuna is also a good source of niacin, vitamin B12 and magnesium.

Soup

At Benihana, you can have The Japanese Onion soup for a small amount of calories. According to myfitnesspal.com, the 10 oz flavorful soup has only 25 calories and zero fat.

Steak

A lot of times, people go to steak houses to get steaks. While red meat has a lot of cholesterol, it has a lot of protein and iron too. The main idea is to get a smaller cut of meat and keep the red meat down to a minimum. Try the Outback Special 6 oz steak. If you eliminate the butter, this meal only has 230 calories and 7.8 grams of fat.

Fish

Salmon is well known as a fish with good fats and omega threes. At Long Horn Steakhouse, the Long Horn Salmon on the lunch menu is a good bet. This entrée has 290 calories and 13 grams of fat. In addition, there are only 300 mg of sodium and three carbs. While the fat is a little higher, this dish has way lower sodium then any other main dish on the menu.

Veggies

Outback Steakhouse has the most delicious vegetables. The steamed vegetables really are a treat. With seasoned butter, the veggies are 143 calories with 10.8 grams of fat and 3.7 grams of dietary fiber. Take away the seasoned butter and the calories drop to 48.6. Likewise, the fat content is 0.4 g.

Salads

Be careful about salads. Sometimes, salads are the most fattening items on a menu. Frequently, I see salads that are seemingly healthy but have over 1000 calories. If you order a salad make sure to get the dressing on the side. Your best choice is to get a mixed green salad. The one at Long Horn Steakhouse has 110 calories and 4.5 grams of fat.

Cinnamon Apples

Cinnamon Apples are usually classified as a side. However, they are so good I think they could be a dessert. The brandied cinnamon apples at Long Horn Steakhouse have 230 calories, zero fat grams and 170 milligrams of sodium.

Kid’s Meal

Kid’s meals are often limited to macaroni and cheese, pizza, and chicken strips. Many of these meals are loaded with fat. Instead, try giving kids the Grilled Chicken Tenders at Long Horn steakhouse. They have 140 calories, two grams of fat and 150 milligrams of sodium.

Dessert

When you go to Benihana, it is both a dining and entertaining experience. At the end of the meal, you can get a pineapple boat that is simply lots of pineapple. It is delicious and refreshing. According to caloriecount.com, there are 78 calories in a cup of diced pineapple. In addition, pineapple is a great source of vitamin C.

Special Requests

Fleming’s Steakhouse does not list exact nutritional info. They do, however, have a nutritional guide that helps you eat healthy. They say to order the Fleming’s salad without walnuts or croutons. Likewise, order the Rosemary Chicken Breast without butter. Then, place half in take out box to take home for later. For dessert, plain mixed berries are available. Indeed, portion control is a big factor at any restaurant. Eat half of your meal or share it. Most restaurants give double that you need.

Keep these tips in mind next time you dine out at a steakhouse.
