Our household is a green household, and I try to use as many natural products as possible. That also includes my choices in personal care products. Over the past eight years I have tried many brands and I have a few choice companies whom I trust implicitly, and Giovanni is one of them.
I have a ton of shampoo’s in our shower, and like to mix them up instead of using the same ones every day. My hair seems to benefit from this. When I use the same shampoo for weeks on end, it seems to lose some of it’s effectiveness. I use Giovanni Smooth As Silk at least twice a week.
I buy my 8.5 ounce bottle’s of Giovanni Smooth as Silk Shampoo in natural food stores. The wording on the front of the bottle calls it a conditioning elixir. It can be used daily, and is enriched with Certified Organic Botanicals. The container is rectangular in shape, with a flip top cap that is easy to remove and snap back in place.

My Experience
The shampoo has a thick, peralized white appearance. Just a nickle sized dollop will produce a full head of suds. After washing my hair, this shampoo easily rinses clean from my hair, leaving no residue, with no stripping of my hairs natural oils. My hair has always been shiny, so I can’t really say that this shampoo added any shine to my hair, but it definitely didn’t detract from it.
I do have color treated hair, and this shampoo does work well, as it claims. I wouldn’t say that it magically seals color, but it does tend to soothe my hair. My experience with color treating my hair is that it leaves my hair a little drier, and the texture becomes less silky. That is what attracted me to this shampoo, it claims to make your hair feel silky smooth. While it did indeed leave my hair soft, I wouldn’t compare it to silk!
Ingredients
Purified water, rosemary oil, valencia orange, mango, lemongrass, ginkgo biloba, echinacea, willow bark, sea kelp, chamomile, soy textured protein, lavender, grapefruit, C14-16 Olefin Sulfonate (coconut dervied), cocoamidopropyl betaine, glycol stearate, dimethicone, vegetable glycerin, polyquaterium 10, olive oil, diazolidinyl urea, octyl methoxycinnamate (sunscreen), sea salt, citric acid (corn), fragrance with essential oils.
Final Thoughts
When was the last time you read the ingredients on a bottle of shampoo and actually knew what they were? Most products these days are filled with so many chemicals, dyes, and other synthetic ingredients. Not Giovanni! Their ingredients are absolutely pure and natural. While it costs companies much more to use quality ingredients like these, the cost is less than what you would think. I picked this bottle up for under $6.00 (less that I would pay for a salon brand!).
While Giovanni also makes a Smooth as Silk Conditoner to compliment this shampoo, I have found that any conditioner works equally well with it. The bottle does show that it indeed does contain some conditioners, as well as a sunscreen to protect my hair when I am outdoors in the elements.
If you are interested in truly organic hair care, I would highly recommend Giovanni Smooth as Silk.
