Monopoly Deal Card Game – Product Review

Monopoly Deal is a family card game that is fast-paced, fun to play, and somewhat addictive. It is one of least expensive games you can buy. Priced under $ 8.00 it will be a family card game that you will enjoy for many years to come. The Monopoly Deal card game can be played in a fraction of the time it would take to play the traditional Monopoly board game, yet it is even MORE fun to play than the original.

My family consists of myself (38), my husband (48), a teenage son (13), and the baby of the family (just turned 9), and we ALL enjoy playing the Monopoly Deal card game. There’s no money to keep up with, no small parts to lose, and it only takes a short amount of time to play. On average, one game of Monopoly Deal takes about 15 minutes to finish. Our family enjoys playing it so much, we usually play 3 – 4 games at a time. We found the written instructions to be a little confusing to understand, so luckily we had a family member that was able to explain them to us. Allow me to attempt to explain the rules for The Monopoly Deal card game.

How to play Monopoly Deal

Playing the Monopoly Deal card game is easy. Everyone is dealt out five cards and the rest of the cards are placed in a pile, face down. At the beginning of your turn, you take two cards from the pile. You do this before EACH one of your turns. Then, you play up to three of your cards. There are five different types of cards in Monopoly Deal. They include:

Property cards – Each property card is color coded, just like the actual properties in the traditional Monopoly board game. Each card indicates how many cards are needed to complete a full set.

Property wildcards – These cards can be substituted for property cards. Use them on any property, and even swap them from different sets as needed.

Money cards – Money cards are placed in front of you and are used to pay rent or other dues.

Rent cards – Rent – Charge other players rent on property you own.

Action cards – There are a lot of different action cards that are mixed into play. Each of these cards has a different name and it gives details on how it can be used directly on the card. A few examples of the action cards include:

Double the Rent – Play a rent card, then follow it with a Double the Rent card. Other players must pay YOU double the rent!
Pass Go– Play this card and pick up two other cards from the pile.
Forced Deal– Force another player to swap a card of your choosing with you.
Just Say No – If another player tries to play any action card on you, just whip out your ‘Just Say No’ card and it cancels the effect of their action card.

** There are other action cards in the Monopoly Deal Card Game. Each one is easy to understand and has a different effect on the game. The action cards allow any player to really change the game with just ONE play! You could be winning until one of the action cards comes into play, then the upper hand may fall onto someone else.

When it is your turn, you decide which three cards to play. These cards can be played three different ways. (1) They can be placed in front of you in your ‘money’ pile, which can include action cards and money both. (2) They can be placed with your property cards. (3) The can be placed in the ‘play pile’ and used against other players.

Keep in mind, if you must pay another player rent, you CANNOT give them cards that you are holding in your hand. The money must come out of your money pile. If you do not have a money pile, you will have to give up property or action cards. (Each card has a monetary value listed in the corner)

What is the object of Monopoly Deal?

The object of the Monopoly Deal card game is to be the first player to collect THREE full sets of properties. It does not matter how much money you have collected. The only way to win is to collect property sets.

How old do you have to be to play Monopoly Deal?

My youngest child just turned nine, and he has no problem playing the Monopoly Deal card game. The box indicates that it is for players 8+, and I would say that is an accurate recommendation. Players will need to be able to read, know their colors, and have basic logic skills to play this family card game.

How many players can play Monopoly Deal?

This family card game can be played with as few as two people, and with as many as five. It’s more fun to play with more players, but it will make the game take a little longer to finish. We’ve played with just two players, but it’s not as much fun since you only have one person to steal properties from and receive rent money from.

Bottom Line – I recommend the Monopoly Deal card game to all my family and friends. If I were to rate it using the 5 star system, 1 star being poor and 5 stars being excellent, I would definitely give it ‘5 stars. It is the best game our family has played in a very long time.
