How to Prepare for a Smoothie Fast

A smoothie fast is not something that is an easy undertaking. To prepare and maintain a smoothie fast, you must be ready to do things that you would not do if you were not fasting.

Whether you are doing it as a diet technique to lose weight, or for why I have done them, which has been in preparation for intrusive medical procedures, it is best to prepare for your diet or fast.

1. Make sure that you have adequate vitamin and protein supplements

Unless you live your dietary life as a vegan, odds are you are not used to having to use a large amount of dietary supplements. In addition, most of us are used to eating meat products and eat highly-processed foods, which include many of the nutrients you will not get from a smoothie diet.

To properly get through a smoothie fast, you will want to use nutritional supplements such as protein powder, multivitamins and caffeine pills. I suggest caffeine pills if you drink multiple caffeinated drinks.

2. You better like fruits and some vegetables

Fruits and vegetables are essential for many of the nutrients that you will need for the length of your smoothie fast. Arguably, the most important nutrient is dietary fiber.

Choosing your fruits and vegetables will probably come down to your preferences. However, I always suggest choosing those with the most carbohydrates. Those will be the drinks that are the tastiest. Try keeping your fruits and vegetables chilled for best taste when mixed with your other ingredients.

3. Dietary fiber and wheat germ will be your friends

Using dietary fiber supplements and wheat germ will more likely keep you regular while you are on a smoothie fast. Dietary fiber supplements and wheat germ are common over-the-counter remedies for irregularity. This may not be an issue for the first day, or even two days. However, after about three days for most people, these diets do not work because digestive irregularity causes discomfort and weakness for some.

4. Do not try a smoothie fast unless you enjoy smoothies

Enjoying smoothies is a prerequisite for trying a smoothie fast. If you are not a person who has ever enjoyed a smoothie, I suggest trying a smoothie served at a smoothie restaurant. Try smoothies from a big chain, such as Smoothie King, Jamba Juice or Tropical Smoothie Cafe, to get ideas for preparing smoothies at home.

I suggest trying to buy from these types of stores because of their varieties. One of the issues that you may encounter is that you may not like a fruit or vegetable in its whole form, but in a smoothie form, may be tasty and agreeable to your palate. In addition, they offer nutritional information for all of their smoothies, which will help you calculate calories and nutrients that you will get out of a smoothie.

5. Alter your diet based on the length of your smoothie fast

If you are going to fast by only drinking smoothies, I would never suggest doing it for more than four to five days at a time. A true smoothie fast should be done only to lose a couple of pounds, if your goal to lose weight.

If you would like to lose weight and make a smoothie diet a normal part of your life, eat at least one balanced meal a day. I suggest that you have the meal around lunch rather than dinner. Lunches are the best time to eat a heavy meal. Since it will be your only meal, it will balance you out for the rest of your waking day.

No matter why you are doing a smoothie diet, have fun with it. You may discover new things that you can incorporate in your everyday diet once you finish a smoothie fast.
