Fun Things to Do in Denton, Texas

Elliptical Machines

It is a pleasure for me to raise my son in a town where recreation seems to be the center of attention! Denton boasts many beautiful parks and three recreation centers plus a Civic Center that hosts multiple events on a monthly basis. The schedule is packed full of exciting events, classes, and activities for everyone, age 0-99.

Gymnastics, dance, ballet, karate, basketball, baseball, soccer, art classes, cooking classes, self-defense classes-the list just goes on. Not only are these types of classes and activities valuable to you and your family, they are affordable! Example of how much a class can cost: Beginners Gymnastics, four 45 minute sessions $25.00 for Denton residents. ($5.00 additional for non-residents)

As a parent you are able to offer your children a wide variety of stimulating experiences without hurting your pocket book. Family fun night, parent’s night out, and holiday events fill the calendar and are fairly inexpensive and sometimes free

It is also worth mentioning that the program as a whole creates many full and part-time jobs and offers exciting opportunities for people to work within the community. Party hostess, basketball coach, golf instructor, swim instructor, and fitness trainor are just a small example of the types of jobs available.

Swimming lessons at the Civic Center Pool or Natorium (indoor pool) is perfect to keep your little ones busy during the spring and summer. The Civic Center pool has a large area for toddlers and young children, even offering a small yellow slide to add some excitement. For the older kids, a large blue slide is available and lots of fun. The Natorium or indoor pool offers a slide as well as heated pools. Ever consider water aerobics? Sign up for classes and enjoy stress free exercise!

Next to the Natoruium is a water park also ran by the city recreations program. When WaterWorks opens in June, summer has officially begun! The exciting water park with a tubing river, four water slides, and a large children’s play pool is the place to be! Bring your own drinks and snacks and plan to spend the day relaxing in the refreshing cold water or in the shade under one of the many pavilions.

Close to the water park, teens enjoy the Skate Works Skate Park with ramps, rails, a half pipe and more! Several skateboarding instruction classes are offered to teach safety and techniques.

The entire city joins in when the Denton Arts and Jazz Festival begins in April. Live music, local artist displays, and fantastic food create a weekend of non-stop entertainment.

Each recreation center offers Gym Memberships featuring a weight room, treadmills and elliptical machines. North Lakes Rec. Center offers the largest gym and most of the classes are offered at that location. You can enroll in classes like Yoga, Teen Fitness programs, and Personal Fitness Training to name a few. Seniorcize is a fitness program designed for older adults to improve cardiovascular fitness, bone and muscle strength, and improve range of motion.

Not only does the city of Denton cater to our human recreational needs, dogs are not left out! Wiggly Field Dog Park off Ryan Rd offers separate fenced areas and drinking fountains for both you and your pet! Dog obedience school is also offered at the Denia Rec. Center.

Boredom is not a problem in Denton Texas, however, deciding on which activity to sign-up for first is. To find out about these programs and more visit www.cityofdenton.com and click on Parks and Recreation for a full schedule of events and activities.
