Food Review: Oroweat Dill Rye Bread

Rye Bread, Wonder Bread

I have been on a diet, and I’m at the point where I am bored with the foods I eat, especially at lunch time. I love sandwiches, and have found a great product to spice up my lunchtime sandwiches! It’s Oroweat Dill Rye bread. It runs almost $4.00 a loaf, but it is worth it!

I have been a fan of rye bread for years, but now Oroweat has added some dill to their long line of rye breads, and it definitely gives my sandwich a little zip. I don’t use mayonnaise because of the high fat content, but instead I use only mustard. I then make a sandwich with either turkey or ham slices, add some fresh lettuce, and of course use my rye dill bread.

This makes a great sandwich! Oh my gosh, if you like rye bread you need to try this! The bread is not a dark rye, and neither the rye or the dill has an overpowering flavor. I even like to toast it as a snack, it’s so chewy, almost like homemade bread.

Thoughts

Trans fats are a big no no. When I get my physical each year, my gynecologist always reminds me how bad trans fats are for our bodies. She warned me about trans fat even before the warnings came to the forefront of the media. Oroweat Dill Rye has zero trans fat! I like that!

The first ingredient is unbleached wheat flour, and I wish the company would use whole wheat flour instead. Many people see “wheat flour” and think it’s whole wheat, but it’s not. All flour is wheat flour. Look for the words “whole wheat”, and you’ll be buying whole grains and adding even more fiber to your diet.

The slices in this loaf are quite large, much bigger than the slices in a loaf of wonder bread. The slices measure 3.4″ by 6.25″, so two slices make a generously sized sandwich. The loaf is one pound in weight, and contains 16 slices per package.

The wrapper is made of a clear cellophane wrap that is quite thick, but it’s really hard to close up once the loaf has been opened. I think this is something that Oroweat could improve on. I generally have to place the loaf inside another bag to keep my bread from going stale prematurely.

There are a few drawbacks, but the flavor this bread adds to a sandwich keeps them from being boring. I love the added zest from the dill and rye, and the two together make a great combination. If you like rye bread, do yourself a favor and give this Oroweat product a try.
