A Guide to Healing Lip Balms

Blistex, C.o. Bigelow, Lip Care, Lip Products, True Blue Spa

Are you getting tired of the same boring lip balm? Are the brands found in drug stores like Chapstick and Blistex no longer doing their job? Well, here’s a guide to get you started on the road to better lip balm. I’m going to discuss five of my favourite lip products to help you decide what kind of balm will be good for you.

C.O. Bigelow’s My Favourite Lip Balm is a fantastic petroleum jelly-like lip balm that comes in either a squeeze tube or a jar. This balm is colourless and odorless and won’t leave a nasty feeling on your lips. My Favourite Lip Balm is enhanced with shea butter, sweet almond oil, and wheat germ oil to soothe and calm your dry and irritated lips. Your lips will feel very moist with this product and while it does need to be reapplied every so often for maximum effectiveness, it lasts a rather long time compared to other lip products. Both the tube and the jar contain .5 oz. of balm and retail for $5.50 each at Bath & Body Works stores nationwide, as well as online.

Wet Your Whistle from Bath & Body Works’ True Blue Spa collection comes in a standard plastic lip balm tube. Wet Your Whistle is colourless and while not particularly flavoured or scented, many say it smells and tastes slightly of cucumber or salad, but it’s not a bad thing. Wet Your Whistle contains shea butter, vitamin E, coconut oil, aloe, and beeswax to calm your angry lips. This lip balm creates a soothing feeling on contact. The tube contains .15 oz. of lip balm and retails for $4 at Bath & Body Works stores nationwide, as well as online.

C.O. Bigelow’s Mentha Lip Balm Stick comes in a standard .15 oz. plastic tube. This lip balm adds a special treat: peppermint oil! Mentha Lip Balm is enhanced with peppermint oil for a tingly feeling and a fresh minty scent. It really smells like you’re putting a Peppermint Pattie right on your lips, so be careful not to eat the lip balm! This lip balm also contains shea butter for extra softness. Mentha Lip Balm is colourless. The price is steep at $7.50 per tube, but it’s well worth it. Mentha Lip Balm is sold at Bath & Body Works stores nationwide, as well as online.

Burt’s Bees beeswax lip balm is something you’ve probably noticed before because of the unique golden yellow packaging. This lip balm comes in a .15 oz. plastic tube. Beeswax, coconut oil, sunflower oil, vitamin E, lanolin, and peppermint oil make this an all-natural lip care remedy. There is a slight peppermint taste and smell to this balm, but it is colourless. Burt’s Bees can be found in most drug stores, including CVS, Walgreens, and Eckerd, for around $2.50 per tube.

Aveeno Intense Relief Medicated Therapy lip balm is a great lip balm that also contains an external analgesic (painkiller) for really chapped and painful lips. This lip balm comes in a .15 oz. plastic tube as well as a jar. Shea butter, jojoba oil, and natural oatmeal are included in this Aveeno lip balm to soothe, condition, and heal your lips. It also contains petroleum and menthol for that tingling sensation. This lip balm is colourless and smells very slightly of menthol. Aveeno Intense Relief Medicated Therapy lip balm can be purchased in stores like Wal-Mart, Walgreens, and Eckerd for around $3 per tube or jar.

I hope this list has helped you to find a more exciting and better healing lip balm. I also recommend that you buy more than one of these and alternate. That seems to help me to avoid getting an adverse reaction to a balm over a long period of time.
