Burt’s Bee Balm Vs. Chapstick Lip Balm

Bee Balm, Chapstick, Lip Balms

Chapstick brand lip balm and Burt’s Bee Balm each have their own strong points. They are a similar product but each has a very different feel and image.

Lip balms are used for both protection and healing qualities. Burt’s Bee Balm and ChapStick have different things to offer the consumer. Both their products are easy to use, store and carry around . They don’t take up much room and can fit in pockets, purses, backpacks or cosmetics bags very easily. ChapStick lip balm and Burt’s Bee Balm are both good products .

Both offer a twist tube, used like a lipstick to apply the product to your lips. Burt’s Bee Balm offers a small old fashioned, very charming looking tin variety too. You apply it with the tips of your fingers like a lip gloss. It is also small enough to fit in a pocket.

ChapStick lip balm is a name that has been around a long time. It is now owned and distributed by Wyeth Consumer Industries. ChapStick lip balm was invented in the 1870’s. In 1963 ChapStick lip balm was only available in one type. Since then they have added many varieties and there are many choices to choose from, if you want to use a ChapStick product. These include the classic regular ChapStick lip balm and flavours that range from cherry and peppermint, to a blue craze berry.

ChapStick brand also makes lip moisturizers and a medicated a line called Flava Craze aimed at kids. There are also sunscreen varieties with SPF filters up to 30. The sunscreen varieties protect against UVB and UVA rays, because lips can get sunburned too.

Chapstick is the generic trademark name in lip balms. Many people refer to all most lip balms as Chapstick, even though that is a registered name for one companies line of products.

Burt’s Bee Balm is the new kid in town, but they have made a unique mark in the lip balm industry.

Burt’s Bee Balm does not offer the variety of lip balm products that ChapStick lip balm does , but what they do have is quality merchandise.

Burt’s Bees Balm comes in varieties like the regular Burt’s Bee Balm, Life Guard’s Choice, and Honey Lip Balm. The company carries many other products too, all equally as appealing as the Burt’s Bee Balm.

One of the strongest points in Burt’s Bee Balm’s favour is the fact that the company is very environmentally aware and proactive. In my book, that alone makes them a worthwhile company.

Burt’s Bee Balm is made of natural ingredients that are easy to understand when I read the label. It contains coconut oil, sunflower oil, vitamin E, lanolin, peppermint oil, comfrey root extract and rosemary extract. That list conjures up a country garden in my mind.

Burt’s Bees Balm contains no petroleums and only uses the natural colours found in the natural ingredients used in the product.

If you look at the regular ChapStick lip balm label the ingredient list looks more like a chemistry lab. The item that stands out most to me on the ChapStick lip balm label is Petrolatum. That ingredient is used in a lot of products including some food items, which I find more than a little disturbing.

I have used ChapStick lip balm for years and it is a good quality product, but after having discovered Burt’s Bee Balm a number of years ago, I much prefer it to the ChapStick lip balm.

Sometimes we as consumers tend to assume that because a product is on the market and massively used that it has to be 100% safe, and I’m not convinced of that anymore when I read labels now. I don’t care how much testing is done, you can’t convince me that a product containing a by product of the oil drilling industry is healthier for me or the environment, than a product that contains things like rosemary, peppermint and coconuts. These are plants that contribute to the health of out environment while they grow.

Stand me between a field full of oil rigs and a field full of fresh produce and herbs. I know which one I would prefer to breath in.

Burt’s Bee Balm even uses a post consumer recycled tube for their tube variety of lip balm.

The final thing that makes me favour the Burt’s Bee Balm is the wonderful smell. If you have ever smelled warm beeswax and fresh rosemary you can begin to get the picture. The peppermint in the ingredients gives my lips a nice tingly feeling when I apply it.

When I first found Burt’s Bee Balm, it was really difficult to locate. It still isn’t as easy to find as ChapStick lip balm, but it is available many more places now. It is worth the extra effort to find. You can find stores that carry Burt’s Bee merchandise, in both Canada and the United States, listed on their website.
