Along with all the dog food scares came the Greenies dog chew scare. The Greenies dog chew were the favorite of my two Chihuahuas .They are toothbrushshaped dog treat intended to clean the dogs breath and teeth.
Last year we started reading warnings from pet owners that dogs were dying due to abdominal obstruction caused by undigested Greenies. We were appalled.thbrush shaped dental dog chew. They are sold in different sizes for different breeds. They provide a cleaning and breath solution as well as what must be a superb taste judging by our dogs reactions. We can say Greenie and they respond.The new Greenies were not affected by the food recall but they have been reformulated due to a number of deaths that were attributed to obstruction in dogs. It seems the old forula did not dissolve in the intestines and became obstructions. Nu Tec also offeres feline Greenies. Smart Biscuits with greenie fragments embedded in them and pill pockets all made by Nu Tec. I haven’t heard any bad news about the feline Greenies.
When we heard the bad news we immediately stopped feeding them to our dogs and brought back our unopened bags of Greenies . We continued to monitor any news about Greenies. A few months ago the announcment was made, new Greenies were available. I am slowly, carefully giving the new Greenies a chance. The ingredients had been reformulated to make them more digestible.I find with the new Greenies the dogs keep them longer, sometimes for days before actually eating them.
Veterinarians recommend that pet owners give their pet’s teeth the same level of care and concern that they give their own teeth. Barring the $350 dental cleaning offered by my Vet we try to keep on top of tartar with our dogs. Neglecting a dog’s teeth can lead to serious health issues and can contribute to liver, kidney and heart disease. But it’s not easy! Most dogs don’t like having their teeth brushed unless they’ve been trained to accept brushing when they were puppies. Dogs need to chew. Greenies are not meals, they are treats meant to be offered once a day.Greenies® are relatively low in calories but be sure to reduce your dog’s daily caloric intake to maintain his ideal body weight . They should not be offered to dogs less than 5 lbs or younger than 6 months of age and should always be offered with fresh drinking water should always be available. We monitor our dogs and suggest you do also when they are chewing onthese treats. Some dogs gulp their treats and this can cause a choking situation. We actually monitor their poops after eating Greenies.
Instructions:
Feed 1 Greenie per day. Greenies are not suitable for dogs less than 5 lbs. or dogs less than 6 months of age. Fresh drinking water should always be available. I cut the teenie Greenies in half for my dogs.
According to the informatin on the site the corn, soy and wheat gluten ingredients comes from North America and not China. None of the Nu Tec brands include rice gluten from the foreign suppliers linked to the recall. The Greenies have never been involved in any recall but the rumor mill gave me a scare.
