Top 10 Bible Verses for Get Well Cards

Christian Literature

Get well cards and greetings can lift the spirits of those who are ill. Who among us does not appreciate a handwritten note from a friend or loved one during a time of illness?

Many get well cards include printed Scriptures, but plenty do not. Why not write an appropriate Bible verse in a get well card for someone special who is sick? Pop it in the postal box. Or, better yet, drop it off in-person with a batch of brownies, a few homemade muffins, a pot of chicken soup or a delicious casserole?

10 Scriptures appropriate for get well cards

Select your favorite personalized passages from the Bible to make a get well card particularly meaningful and encouraging. Here are my top 10 favorite Scriptures for raising the spirits of folks who are battling illness or infirmity.

Representing a variety of Scripture translations and paraphrases, these Bible verses are listed in biblical order, including links to their locations in online Bibles (for further reference and Bible study).

1. A Healing Blessing

“May the Lord bring good to you and keep you. May the Lord make His face shine upon you and be kind to you. May the Lord show favor toward you, and give you peace.” (Numbers 6:24-26, NLV)

This Old Testament prayer of benediction, or blessing, entreats the Lord to shed His kindness upon the recipient. What could be more appropriate in a personal get well card for someone suffering with sickness?

2. A Testimony to Divine Healing

“Let all that I am praise the Lord; with my whole heart, I will praise His holy name. Let all that I am praise the Lord; may I never forget the good things He does for me. He forgives all my sins and heals all my diseases. He redeems me from death and crowns me with love and tender mercies. He fills my life with good things. My youth is renewed like the eagle’s!” (Psalm 103:1-5, NLT)

God may choose to heal individuals in multiple ways, from now until eternity. Still, His promise of ultimate restoration for those who seek Him is unmistakable in Bible passages like this one from the Psalms. Who would not be encouraged by reading such a bold proclamation of faith, particularly during a time of illness?

3. An Encouraging Truth

“He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak.” (Isaiah 40:29. NIV)

Anyone who has ever been sick knows the discouragement that can accompany sickness-sapped strength and evaporating vigor. This promise of power is a real faith booster and a great addition to a get well greeting.

4. A Promise of God’s Help

“Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.” (Isaiah 41:10, KJV)

How often do serious illnesses or devastating diseases seem to plague people with fear? Unknown outcomes and scary medical procedures can be stressful. But this Bible verse stands against fear, reminding readers of God’s promise of protection and aid, making it a suitable scripture for a thoughtful get well note.

5. An Affirmation of God’s Healing Power

“Surely He took up our pain and bore our suffering, yet we considered Him punished by God, stricken by Him, and afflicted. But He was pierced for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on Him, and by His wounds we are healed.” (Isaiah 43:5, NIRV)

Might a sick loved one be encouraged by knowing that the Lord Himself experienced the ultimate suffering, when He took on human form and gave His own life for mankind? Because of His agony, all who know Him may experience eternal healing. What a promise.

6. A Declaration of Divine Devotion

“Yes, I have loved you with an everlasting love; therefore with loving-kindness have I drawn you and continued My faithfulness to you.” (Jeremiah 31:3b, AMP)

Recovering from illness can be a lonely business. Yet God may meet a solitary sole in those quiet moments, as this Old Testament message of His love announces. This Scripture stands like a heavenly hug, making it perfect for a get well card message.

7. A Word of Faith

“Jesus said, ‘If? There are no “ifs” among believers. Anything can happen.'” (Mark 9:23, MSG)

In God’s power, anything is possible for those who believe. Do you believe it?

This modern paraphrasing of a familiar Scripture on faith is striking in its simplicity. God is able. What an encouragement such words can be to those who are earnestly praying for personal healing.

8. A Prayer for Personal Peace

“Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:6-7, NASB)

A disease may dictate than an individual rest in bed, but bed-rest does not necessarily equal peace. However, this sweet Scripture shares the Lord’s promise of peace to all who seek their rest in His arms.

9. A Call for Faithful Healing Prayer

“Is any one of you sick? He should call the elders of the church to pray over him and anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise him up.” (James 5:14-15, NIV)

Do you believe in divine healing? This often-quoted Bible verse reveals a traditional pattern for healing prayer. Tactfully presented in a get well message, perhaps after such a prayer meeting has occurred, it may encourage people of faith, who earnestly plead for miracles.

10. A Prayer of Encouragement

“Dear friend, I pray that all goes well for you. I hope that you are as strong in body as I know you are in spirit.” (3 John 2, CEV)

How often do we offer to pray for dear ones who are sick, but perhaps forget to follow through? This familiar passage of the Bible is a prayer in itself. Why not write these words in a get well card, praying accordingly at the same time?
