24 Holiday Casserole Ideas

Casseroles

While reading through the different recipes and casserole ideas, I realized each of these casseroles could be served rather than the traditional Thanksgiving, Christmas or Easter dishes. Some of the casseroles are meat based and could eliminate cooking a turkey, ham, goose, duck or roast for any of those holidays if everyone wanted to have a buffet style casserole holiday dinner.

Each family or friends coming to your home for a holiday dinner could choose from the list of twenty-five holiday casserole ideas below. They could fix the casserole at home and bring it for the meal. The heat time for the casseroles would be far easier to do than fixing a complete meal in your home.

Souffle Hoppin’ John

A quick and easy souffle that can be made for any holiday. This would be a great recipe for New Year’s Day since it has black eyed peas in it for those who believe black eyed peas bring good luck for the year.

Cheese-and-Vegetable-Rice Casserole

This casserole doesn’t require any form of meat. This would be a great casserole for the vegans in your family or as friends. For those who want to make it 100% vegan, substitute a soy based cheese for the cheddar cheese. Also, substitute a vegetable broth for the chicken broth.

Italian Pasta Gratin

This Italian baked pasta dish would be another great vegetarian dish. As with the casserole above, substitute any non-kosher vegan items for those that are. It can also be made as is for those who want to experience it as it is written.

Herbed Root Vegetable Cobbler

This casserole is topped with parmesan dumplings. The ingredients include Yukon gold potatoes, rutabaga, carrots, parsnips, and onion. There are herbs that are added to make it a tastier dish.

Baked Risotto with Sauce and Artichokes

If you’re a fan of fennel this may be a dish you will enjoy. Since I’m not a huge fan of fennel, I may try this one without it and see how it tastes. Outside of the fennel, the rest of the dish sounds scrumptious.

Wild Mushroom Bread Pudding

Hadn’t ever heard of anyone making a mushroom bread pudding before. This may be a very interesting twist on a comfort food.

Bulgar-Wild Rice Casserole

This is one of those casseroles I have tried before. A coworker made it for a store holiday dinner and it was great. It would be a wonderful side dish for anytime of the year.

Artisanal Bread Stuffing

This is a twist on the traditional bread stuffing. Rather than using French bread this uses an artisan bread, pine nuts, fennel, and olives with some of the basic dressing ingredients.

Creamed Corn Casserole

This is a slightly twisted version of a corn casserole. I had written an article already on corn casseroles, but I don’t believe this one was on the list.

Chicken Florentine Artichoke Bake

A slightly different version for chicken Florentine. It could be made from leftovers from Thanksgiving or Christmas.

Leek and Root Vegetable Gratin

Potatoes, rutabagas, parsnips, and leeks make up the main ingredients for this casserole. This would or could be another vegetarian dish that could be made with a soy cheese substitution.

Butternut Squash Lasagna

This version of lasagna is touted as being a vegetarian dish; no substitutions would need to be made. I had never thought about using butternut squash as the filling of lasagna.

Macaroni and Brie with Crab

This is more of a grown-up Mac and cheese than one for kids. It does sound like a good way to make Mac and cheese stand out from the crowd.

Walnut and Sage Potatoes au Gratin

This is surely a twist the comfort food Potatoes au Gratin. A little potato seasonal pick me up will do the trick.

Swiss Corn Bake Cups

I can say this corn casserole is definitely not on the list of corn casseroles in the article I mentioned in the other corn casserole idea.

Chipotle Scalloped Sweet Potatoes

This is a spicy twist on scalloped potatoes. Rather than the standard russet potatoes, sweet potatoes and Monterey jack cheese with a splash of chipotle make a unique dish in itself.

Quick Lasagna Casserole

This is a quick nontraditional lasagna recipe. There is no layering of noodles and meat and cheese in this recipe.

Smokey Salmon Casserole

A few dishes of this salmon casserole instead of the standard meats can become a new tradition for any holiday. For those who follow the rules of Lent, this would be the perfect dish for Fridays and possibly Ash Wednesday and Good Friday depending on how devout you are in the practices of Lent.

Cheesy Mashed Potato Pots

Even though this one might be hard to do in individual cups for a large crowd, it could be done in a larger baking dish and served that way. Either way, it would be great side dish for any holiday.

Creamy Potato Casserole

A twist on the potato and ham casserole I have seen several times at family and work dinners for the holidays.

Potato-Goat Cheese Gratin

Another twist on gratin potato casseroles. This casserole uses nonfat milk and goat cheese with potatoes. Leeks and garlic are also incorporated into this potato casserole.

Butternut Squash Bake

I may have try this butternut squash casserole at some point. It has noodles, parmesan cheese, and shallots as part of the ingredients.

New Sweet Potato Casseroles

Rather than just using the main sweet potato casserole recipe, there are extra stir ins and toppers you can use to create more sweet potato casseroles with.

Green Bean Casserole

What holiday dinner would be complete without a green bean casserole? This green bean casserole has a few changes in it.
