Something Borrowed Comparison

Confessions of a Shopaholic, Something Blue

Kate Hudson and Ginnifer Goodwin play the best of friends in the movie “Something Borrowed”, now on DVD. When I saw the trailers for this movie I remember saying to myself, “I want to see that, but I want to read the book first.” I have been eyeing this book every time I passed it on the shelves at any local store.

It was decided, I was going to read the book first. I went out and picked up a copy of “Something Borrowed” by Emily Giffin. This is a great chick lit book. Darcy and Rachel are friends from grade school. Everything always fell in Darcy’s lap, where Rachel had to work really hard for everything. From the very beginning there was always this competitive nature between Rachel and Darcy. Rachel moves to New York for law school and Darcy follows. Darcy gets a great job in Public Relations and Rachel hates her law job. Darcy is engaged to Rachel’s best friend from law school. Rachel is single and about to turn 30. Where is her life going?

The book continues to tell the story of where Rachel’s life is going. Drama happens between Rachel and Dex, Darcy’s fiancé. Darcy tries to set Rachel up with one of Dex’s friends, Marcus. Things don’t work out between Rachel and Marcus. Dex and Darcy move on with all their wedding plans, until truths are revealed.

Every woman who reads this book can relate to one of the characters. We all have that friend that good things just seem to happen to, Darcy. We all have that really supportive friend that will help us with just about anything, Rachel. We could even be one of these two characters in our own lives.

When finishing “Something Borrowed” you can read part of the follow up book, “Something Blue.” Let’s just say when I finished “Something Borrowed” I had to run out the next day and pick up “Something Blue.” What I love about these two books is how “Something Borrowed” is told from Rachel’s point of view and “Something Blue” is told from Darcy’s point of view. The first portion of “Something Blue” retells the story of “Something Borrowed”, but not in a horrible re-hash way. It’s the other side of the story.

After finishing both books I was really scared to watch the movie. I was scared because “Confessions of a Shopaholic” is so incredibly different than the book, and I was afraid that was going to be the case here. Well, I sat down and watched “Something Borrowed” waiting for all my fears to be confirmed. I am happy to say they were not. The biggest difference is that Ethan is in New York in the movie and he is in London in the book. Ethan’s character in the movie is actually two characters in the book, Haley, Rachel’s co-worker, and Ethan. The only other noticeable difference was the way Claire was portrayed in the movie. She was a very different character in the book. She was very much a fashionista in the book and came across as very needy in the movie.

In most cases the book is better than the movie. I would not necessarily say that in regards to “Something Borrowed.” Both are good, and the director did not stray that far from the book itself. That was refreshing. I would recommend both book and movie.
