Chick Flicks: 10 Best Upcoming Romantic Comedies of 2011

Chick Flicks, Flicks, Romantic Comedies, Wilmer Valderrama

What are the best upcoming romantic comedies of 2011? From chick flicks for teens to sexy comedies that guys might not mind being forced to watch, these upcoming romantic comedies of 2011 are looking for a little love from everyone:

No Strings Attached – When it comes to romantic comedies, a January release date generally isn’t very promising. However, with Ashton Kutcher and Natalie Portman involved, this is one of the upcoming chick flicks here that might be worth giving a shot for the eye candy alone. But women be forewarned: your guy might fall head-over-heels for Natalie Portman’s character, a drop-dead gorgeous doctor who just wants to keep her relationship sexual and doesn’t believe in monogamy. But if you’re not easily threatened by a girl your guy will never have a shot at, check it out on January 21, 2011, and be sure to check out the movie just like it starring Natalie Portman’s equally sexy ‘Black Swan’ costar later on this list.

From Prada to Nada – And here’s another of the upcoming romantic comedies of 2011 being released in January, and one that I doubt many men are going to want to see. The cast includes Alexa Vega, Camilla Belle, April Bowlby, and Wilmer Valderrama (who probably dated each of his costars for about a month apiece), and the plot is this: two spoiled Latina rich girls from Beverly Hills are left penniless when their dad dies and have to move in with their aunt in a less-than-glamorous neighborhood in East L.A., where they learn what’s really important (family over fashion, etc.). Of course they find romance in their new circumstance, and this modern version of ‘Sense and Sensibility’ looks like it’s aiming to become the next ‘Clueless’ (but with a little more culture). So while the January 28, 2011 release is dubious, it’s still one of the must-see chick flicks of 2011 for me thanks to an appearance by one of my biggest girl crushes, April Bowlby (the only thing that made ‘Two and a Half Men’ temporarily bearable).

Gnomeo and Juliet – And here’s one of the upcoming romantic comedies you can take the kiddies to, as this animated tale retells Shakespeare’s beloved story of star-crossed lovers with a twist: Romeo and Juliet have been replaced with garden gnomes. The odd premise here is definitely hit or miss, but it’s worth checking out to see how this family movie deals with that last fateful kiss. So be sure to try and find a place in your heart for these gaudy garden ornaments on February 11, 2010.

Just Go With It – I’m not sure that I can buy a guy that looks like Adam Sandler having a chance in hell with a girl that looks like Brooklyn Decker, but I guess we’re supposed to “just go with it” in one of the romantic comedies here that looks like it might appeal a little more to males. However, if you look at the term “chick flicks” a little bit differently, this one is definitely loaded with babes, thanks to a cast that also includes Jennifer Aniston and Nicole Kidman. Basically Adam Sandler’s character is wooing Brooklyn Decker’s when she sees a tan line on his finger, which he explains away by saying he’s in the midst of a divorce. So she demands to meet his ex-wife in order to get permission to go forward with their relationship (who does that?). Unfortunately, he lied about the whole divorce thing and had actually been faking a marriage to score with the ladies, so he has to now convince his office assistant (Jennifer Aniston) to pretend to be his ex-wife. So the premise is rather silly, but at least an attempt was made at making it original (plus it’s one of the only upcoming romantic comedies that will be out around Valentine’s Day with a release date of February 11, 2011, so it’s best to just go with it).

What’s Your Number – And another of my favorite funny girl crushes stars in another of the upcoming chick flicks of 2011 that might be worth seeing for the cast alone. Anna Faris’ character has met her sexual limit at 20 men, so she decides to revisit each of her conquests, hoping that one of them is actually “the one”. And, of course, hilarity ensues. Andy Samberg, Zachary Quinto, and Chris Evans evidently make up a portion of her list, but I’m most looking forward to Joel McHale’s appearance. So be sure to check out one of the upcoming romantic comedies that really looks to appeal to women with a smorgasbord of men when this one hits theaters on April 29, 2011.

Something Borrowed – This is one of the upcoming romantic comedies of 2011 trying to lure women in with a wedding theme, but brides-to-be might want to skip this one. Ginnifer Goodwin stars as a single, unhappy good girl tortured by the constant gloating of her soon-to-be-wed best friend (Kate Hudson). However, when one drink too many lands the single gal in bed with her friend’s fiancé (whose she’s had a crush on since forever), things get really complicated. John Krasinski will playing pal and confidant to Ginnifer Goodwin’s character, and while it might be predictable (an important ingredient in all chick flicks), it’s hard not to hope that the two of them end up together (they would make an absolutely adorable couple). See if it happens on June 10, 2011.

Monte Carlo – Here’s one of the upcoming romantic comedies of 2011 definitely aimed at the teen crowd, as Selena Gomez stars as a girl that’s mistaken for a socialite while visiting Paris. This leads to her and her two travel buddies being flown to Monte Carlo for a charity ball, where you can bet they all find a chance at romance. However, there’s also a bit of intrigue thrown in for good measure when the girls have to solve the mystery of a missing million-dollar necklace, lest they be exposed as frauds. Of course it’s one of the most frivolous chick flicks here, but it will have no shortage of fans when it hits theaters on July 1, 2011 (maybe colorful and carefree teen movies like these can tear the ‘Twilight’ crowd away from all that angst).

Friends with Benefits – And here’s one of the upcoming romantic comedies of the summer of 2011 aimed at adults. Mila Kunis will be competing with ‘Black Swan’ costar Natalie Portman for the title of the most desired movie character of 2011 as she also decides to try a “no strings attached” approach to sex, with her bedroom buddy being played by Justin Timberlake. Judging from the trailer, this one could be quite a bit raunchier than it’s competition, and the fact that it’s directed by the guy who brought us ‘Easy A’ definitely makes it seem promising (another advantage: Emma Stone also makes an appearance here). However, you’ve got to check out both to decide which of these chick flicks is the most bearable, so don’t automatically put this one in second place just because it’s being released second on July 22, 2011.

Jack and Jill – Two Adam Sandler romantic comedies might seem like a little too much to swallow, but you’ve got a big break before this one hits theaters on November 11, 2011. I’m not sure how romantic this comedy will be, but it’s definitely got a fun twist when it comes to chick flicks: Adam Sandler will be playing a chick. In dual roles, he will star as a married man (his wife will be played by Katie Holmes, which is a bit intriguing) whose twin sister (who he will also be portraying, pigtails and all) comes to visit for Thanksgiving, but refuses to leave. So where will the romance come in? Well, no word on that yet, but if Jill goes looking for love, this could be hilarious or, much like Sandler in drag, a hot mess. Still, at least you’ll have a Thanksgiving-themed movie to watch when it hits theaters on November 11, 2011.

New Year’s Eve – And here’s another of the upcoming romantic comedies of 2011 set during a holiday, as Warner Bros. hopes to duplicate the success of ‘Valentine’s Day’ with a cast of stars that would make Robert Altman envious. Among those with the prospect of a New Year’s Eve kiss are Lea Michele, Robert De Niro, Ashton Kutcher, Jake Gyllenhaal, Taylor Swift, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Hillary Swank. So is there a chance that this one could tank? My bet is that Warner Bros. is going have a very good new year after this one hits theaters on December 9, 2011.

So from movies that overwhelm with the sheer number of romances to chick flicks trying to draw in men with the chicks starring in them, there’s definitely something for everyone on this list of the best upcoming romantic comedies of 2011.
