The Best Chick Flicks of 2009

Chick Flicks, Confessions of a Shopaholic, Greek History, Nia Vardalos

Whether you admit you love chick flicks or they’re a guilty pleasure, most people-many men included-have a soft spot for them. Chick flicks make us feel good. If you’re looking for a movie to watch for some alone time, a good choice for a girls night, or a date movie, here are the best chick flicks of 2009.

Already Released:

Julie & Julia

Based on a true story, Julie & Julia is a sugary sweet confection of the stories of two women: chef Julia Child and blogger Julie Powell. Meryl Streep and Amy Adams star as the two main women, and their stories are intertwined as they discover truths about themselves and life through cooking.

My Life In Ruins

If you liked My Big Fat Greek Wedding, then Nia Vardalos’s newest movie is for you. Sadly it never reaches the same level as My Big Fat Greek Wedding, but it is still a great chick flick: romantic, funny, sometimes sickeningly sweet, and full of fantastic scenery. In My Life In Ruins, Nia stars as a tour guide in Greece who loves Greek history and the sites she visits, but hates her job. A new bus driver and a group of eccentric tourists help her to open up, enjoy her job, communicate better with people, and-ultimately-discover love. They tour Greece, and so expect great shots of both sites like the Parthenon and the beach.

Confessions of a Shopaholic

Based on the popular book of the same title, Confessions of a Shopaholic is the story of a woman who can’t resist the lure of great shopping, and so falls victim to the temptations of Prada, Gucci, and other high-end fashion. However, she can’t afford this lifestyle and is in serious debt. She manages to get a job as the writer of a financial advice column, and falls for her boss. However, she is still being chased by the debt collector, and despite writing great advice, just can’t seem to follow it herself. Can she control her addition to shopping? Will her boss love her back? For any woman who has every window shopped and drooled over the new Versace range, or has ever spent more money on a pair of boots than she should have, this woman will make entertaining (if fairly predictable) viewing. Joan Cusack is a great addition to the cast in her supporting role.

Did You Hear About The Morgans?

Despite the long title, this romantic comedy looks really good. Hugh Grant and Sarah Jessica Parker star as a troubled couple that witness a crime together. They are forced together when they go into the witness protection program, and put in a remote country town. It offers comedy, romance, and charm.
