Encourage fine motor development by having your preschool students roll play dough into balls. Another idea is to let them cut out various shapes of sports balls with safety scissors. Also, let your preschool students practice lacing using poster board cutouts of sports balls and yarn.

Take your preschool students outside or to the school gymnasium to play a rousing game of T-ball! Be sure to give each student encouragement and praise for their efforts throughout the game.

Sports balls collage: Cut out several shapes of different types of balls. Older preschoolers can cut the shapes out themselves. Let your students paint the balls the appropriate colors with water color paints. For example, paint a circle orange for a basketball, a football shape brown and so on. When they have finished painting, let them glue the ball shapes onto a piece of construction paper.

Give your students sheets of paper on which you have printed the following:

1 line of 1 baseball
1 line of 2 volleyballs
1 line of 3 hockey pucks
1 line of 4 footballs
1 line of 5 basketballs

and so on through the number 10 or higher. Have your students count the number of balls in each line and then write that number at the end of the line.

Pre-writing Center Activities for Preschool Lesson Plan: Sports

For younger students, provide sheets of paper with the letters S and s lightly printed on them. Have the children trace the letters. do the same with the number 9.

For older students, provide an example of the letters S and s and the number 9. Have the students practice writing the letters and number freehand.
