Kindergarten and Preschool Alphabet Lesson Plan for Letter E

Sight Words

These lesson plans are based on one letter of the alphabet per lesson, and are aimed at children in kindergarten and preschool. In most lessons there is an animal, snack idea, color or shape, body part or movement, music, fun activity or arts and crafts, and common sight words (these are words that the student should eventually memorize, by sight). Be sure to see the guide for suggestions on using the “Lesson plan with a letter in mind” lesson plans. This guide also has a list of recommended supplies.

Lesson Plan for Letter E e: On your lined school paper, write a capital E and three dotted capital E’s. Have your student trace these and try to write at least two on their own; repeat with lowercase letter. You may need to help your student correctly hold their pencil, or even help them to trace and shape the letters if writing is a new skill.

Provide your student with a page from a large print word search puzzle. Write the letter E, at the top, and circle one E on the puzzle. Have the student circle all remaining E‘s. Make it fun, like a treasure hunt. When they are done, double check their work. Be sure to praise their effort. A fun activity to try next is to connect the dots. Draw a line that connects all of the circled E‘s. This is a great hand-eye coordination activity.

Animal: A great word for this letter is ELEPHANTl. Talk about where elephants live? Has your student seen an elephant at the zoo? What do they eat? Can you act like an elephant, with a long trunk? Try to get a couple books at the library on this animal. Read them together and look at the pictures.

Sight Words: These are words that the student should eventually memorize, by sight. The letter E, doesn’t have any specific sight words. This is a good time to review and refresh sight words that the student is still working on.Play games with the cards, such as memory. Re-use the sight word flash cards every lesson, and add to them as you progress through these lessons. Memorization of sight words aid reading speed and comprehension.

Snack Idea: A great snack idea for this letter is Egg. Boiled, scrambled with cheese, chopped up, or ? Eggs can be cooked many ways. Hard boiled and decorated is a kid favorite. There is no end to the ways an egg can be decorated.

Color or Shape: This lesson can have more than one color. Use the color gray (for elephants) and white (for eggs). You can also use the shape oval, egg shape. Most children find drawing ovals easier than circles. Try drawing a nest with several eggs in it.

Body Part or Movement: This lesson use the body parts Eyes and Elbow. They both starts with E. Encourage your student to try writing the words with help. Have the student show you their arms, and bend them. Make sure they know where the elbow is. Does your student know their right and left sides? Up and Down? Practice these with the student. Take an exercise break and make ovals(this lesson’s shape) with your arms. Talk about eyes, the colors that they come in on people. Are eyes on animals different colors? Why do some people wear glasses? Do you know anyone with glasses?

Cut out an elephant head with trunk and attach to the bag. Almost every student loves cut and paste project, however mastery of scissors takes patients. If your student is new to scissors, enforce scissor safety rules.

There are other ways to include this lessons letter into your day. Do you know anyone whose name starts with E? Put labels on anything in the house or schoolroom that starts with E.
