Helpful Tips for Cutting Your Own Bangs

Bangs, Cut Your Own Hair, Cutting Hair

If you’re looking for ways to save money, cutting your own hair instead of going into a salon can save you a lot of money. It may not seem like much, but if you go into the stylist every other month and spend $30 (which is cheap and probably less than you spend), then over the course of a year you would save $180 just on haircuts. Also, cutting your hair yourself, especially for trims, saves time because you can do it at a convenient time at home rather than having to go out.

Here are some tips for cutting your own bangs.

First of all, decide how you want your hair to look. If you’re trying out a new style, look at pictures and decide what you do and don’t like. You can buy hairstyle magazines, but I recommend saving the money and just looking them up on the internet. Try to find models with the same face shape and other features as yourself so that you can have an idea not only of whether you like the style, but whether they’re right for you.

Even if you’re just trimming an existing style, you need to decide how much shorter you want it to be.

Use these ideas as a guide, but don’t get too caught up on your hair looking exactly like the picture. Think of the pictures as a starting point rather than end result.

If you’re going to cut your own hair, I recommend buying a pair of scissors just for hair cutting. They don’t need to be fancy or expensive. Don’t use them for anything other than cutting hair. Using scissors on paper and other materials can dull them, and so they won’t be as effective when used on hair. Also, if you’re cutting your bangs, you need a mirror. The easiest way to do it is normally to stand in front of your bathroom mirror so that you can watch what you are doing.

Nest, relax and do it. Remember that it’s only hair, and that even if you mess up, it will grow back in a few weeks.

Bangs are such a delicate style that I recommend only cutting a little bit at a time. If you don’t cut them short enough, you can always cut off more later, but if you cut off too much, you’re stuck.

Don’t cut bangs when your hair is wet. Wet hair seems longer than it really is, and so you’ll probably end up with bangs that are shorter than you intended. Instead, just use a damp comb to brush them straight.

If you want heavy, across the forehead bangs, the hardest part is getting them straight all the way across. Don’t try to cut the whole length at one time, instead use smaller cuts that curve around your head for a more even effect. Pay attention to where they hit at each eyebrow. (A warning: on many people, eyebrows are not at exactly the same height, and so your bangs will actually have to be slightly uneven in order to look straight!). Don’t be afraid to start your bangs further back on your head. The heavier you want your bangs to be, the further back on your head you will need to start them. Just comb the hair forward and add it to your bangs.

If you want your bangs to frame your face, decide how much of your hair you want to include in your bangs. Then tie back the rest of your hair so that it doesn’t accidentally get cut with your bangs. For a layered effect, remember that the more layers there are, the more natural the effect is. Don’t just cut big stairs. Instead, point the scissors straight upwards and cut up into the hair so that it cuts thinner and thicker sections. This will help to blend the layers.

Remember, cutting your hair yourself doesn’t mean that you have to do everything alone. Feel free to recruit a spouse, partner, child, parent, or friend to help you. If nothing else they can help tell you how it looks, or they can help you to tidy up stray long hairs.
