Gastroparesis Diet Recommendations

Eating Better, Gastroparesis

As I have discussed before, the subject of gastroparesis and how it relates back to diabetes a lot of times. There can be other causes of this delayed stomach emptying disorder, but diabetes is about one of the main ones since it affects the vagus nerve.

When a person is struggling with this chronic medical condition on a daily basis, they need a diet to go along with any prescribed medications. In this article here then, I’d like to tell you what is best to eat, and what is best to avoid.

You want to eat foods obviously, that are easily processed by the stomach and digested, and not something that is going to not empty and ferment inside the stomach for days. So the first thing I will do, is tell you in steps, what foods in the diet will need to be included and those to avoid eating.

Initially, when you start on this diet and your stomach is really in bad shape from not emptying it, the diet’s beginning will be only liquids. Soft drinks that contain sugars are allowed since that is the only carbohydrate you can eat. Along with that, only plain saltine crackers may be eaten, along with plain broth soup. This phase of the diet will probably be prescribed for just a three day period.

After that, in step 2 of the diet plan, you can start eating better but must avoid certain foods. These foods are allowed:

1. Soup such as bouillon and broths and those that contain noodles

2. For milks, any skim milks or fat free yogurt’s and cheeses are allowed. Stay away from any whole-milk products.

3. In your bread group, you can have cream of wheat, pastas, egg noodles, rice that is white, bread and cereals, and low-fat crackers. Oatmeal is not allowed, nor is whole grain rice. On your cereals, you will have to work with your dietitian on the ones that are easiest to digest since some of them are not easily broken down.

4. For your meat group on this diet you can have eggs, and peanut butter. These two things will make up your protein. Don’t eat beef, fish, pork, poultry, dried beans, peas or lentils.

5. In the vegetable category, your beets, carrots, acorn squash, mushrooms, sweet potatoes, V-8 tomato juice spinach, potatoes without skins, and strained tomato sauce is permitted. The vegetables to stay away from are zucchini, any green beans, eggplant, corn, water chestnuts, celery, and Brussels sprouts.

6. Fats you can have in small amounts.

7. For sweets and desserts stick to puddings and custards that have skim milk. gelatin’s,fruit ice, and hard candies. Stay away from any high fat desserts like cakes, cookies, doughnuts, pies, and pastries.

8. Drinks should include soft drinks. Drink these slowly.

So this is the basic diet plan for gastroparesis. Following your diet carefully along with your prescribed doses of digestive medications should help your condition.
