Having cats in your home is a wonderful experience, although when they get into a fight and or get hurt, you become a worrier. Recently, my 4 year old, 10 pound, tabby cat named Tiger, got into a fight with her sister Panther. Now Panther is 4 years old as well but is an overweight 18 pound black cat that can be very aggressive and territorial. They are both fully clawed and Tiger suffered a bite wound to the tummy.
It seemed small whenever I first saw it, so I really didn’t think that it would cause any problems. I was wrong. A few days after the incident, Tiger had nibbled off all of the hair on her tummy, including nibbling off one of her nipples, and caused the small bite wound area to turn red and developing a puss. Needless to say, instinct took over and Tiger began chewing, licking, and nibbling on the area, causing it to become worse.
So, we tried rubbing alcohol to get her to stop licking… didn’t work. I tried Neosporin, didn’t work. Finally I went to my local PetSmart store and found a product especially made to tend to the first aid of cats called R-7 Liquid Bandage Spray.
R-7 Liquid Bandage Spray is designed for minor wounds, which obviously this was, and the rest of her tummy was just irritated because she wouldn’t stop licking it. This product is awesome because it has a waterproof seal that assists in keeping out any type of debris, such as germs and dirt while it is healing. The best part about this is, when she tries to lick it off, she’ll be met with a bitter taste from a sage that will discourage her from continuing to nibble on that infected area. And this product is completely safe.
Before using this spray, you want to make sure that the wound is clean and dry. Normally what I do is get a warm cloth and wipe down her tummy then let it dry for a few minutes. Then spray the affected area with R-7 Liquid Bandage Spray and allow it to dry for about one to two minutes. Usually when I spray Tiger with this product she doesn’t try to run away, it has a soothing effect which doesn’t seem to leave any type of sticky or slimy residue. The spray is alcohol free too! It is a pump type of spray, which gives it an easy apply method.
Make sure that when you choose to use this spray that it is for external use only and isn’t supposed to be used for burns. And make sure that you use this on felines only!
I paid about six dollars for a 4 oz. bottle. This is a great product! R-7 also has anti-septic cleansing pads, a pain relieving lotion, and a wound care spray. Make sure that you read the labels and choose the best product that is right for your cat.
Its been about 2 weeks since I started applying R-7 Liquid Bandage Spray onto Tiger and not only is the redness gone, but she has stopped chewing and licking the area and the wound is healing and her fur is starting to grow back!
