Hunter’s West Apartments in located at 6501 Yale Street in Westland Michigan right in the heart of the city. It is less than two miles from the Westland mall and from many shops and restaurants. It is location is decent except during the holiday season when the traffic around the mall is horrible, but if that was the only issue I could have dealt with it, but it wasn’t.
Hunter’s West is a two building complex with nine floors in each building. We lived on the ninth floor or as they called it, the penthouse. I have to laugh now because they used the term penthouse for that nasty, dirty floor. When you walk into the building on the main floor and look around you see an older but very clean building. Do not get used to it because once you step on the elevator all that disappears.
The elevator makes such horrible noises that you are not even sure your going to make it to the top floor. Then when the doors open and you can breathe a sign of relief that you did in fact make it you open your eyes to see the nasty, dirty, filthy surroundings. The wallpaper is peeling away from the wall, the carpet is stained with who knows what and there is garbage on the floor over flowing from the trashcan that has not been emptied in weeks.
I know your wondering how I didn’t notice this before I moved in and signed a lease. Simply put we needed a place to live and fast so I didn’t ask all the questions I should have. Not to mention the model apartment they show you is located on the first floor where everything is nice, tidy and clean.
Another bad thing about this apartment complex is the fact that maintenance is very slow in getting around to fixing things and when they do finally show up at your door to fix something they never have the parts in stock to repair it. So if something stops working or gets broken be prepared to wait for weeks to get it fixed.
Also, if you come home from work or shopping after five pm don’t plan on finding a parking spot anywhere near the front door. The parking lot is horrible and poorly lit up at night. I never felt safe walking from the back row of the parking lot all the way to the front door in a very dark parking lot. You could park in the back of the building closer to a door but the locks that are on the back doors were always broken and on the other side of the door is a stair well. If I had to park in the rear of the building, I always worried about who or what would be on the other side of the door.
Hunter’s West also offered many community amenities such as an indoor heated pool and a work out room with a sauna. Nice amenities if they were ever open or if they worked. The pool was closed for 4 months of the twelve months we lived there and that is not including the days here and there that it was closed or no one came to open it on the weekends too. The heater was always broken so the pool was of no use during the winter months, which of course was one of the selling points when they showed you the pool. The work out room might have been nice at one time but in the whole 12 months we lived there the treadmill in the men’s work out room never worked and in the women’s work out room the sauna never worked, not even once.
There was also a lot of partying and drugs going on in the building. The police were in the building at least once a week, if not more, because of different parties, arguments and drugs. I just did not feel it was a very safe place to live.
Also taking any complaints to the management was useless since nothing was ever done about it. Once you signed your lease you were just another resident, and management appeared as though they could careless about you and the problems in the complex.
That was a horrible twelve months and luckily we have moved out. No, I am not an angry resident who was evicted or anything like that just someone who can give you first hand information on what is was like to live in that 2bedroom dump that they had the nerve to charge over $600 a month for. Do not even waste your time with the place and do not, whatever you do, sign a lease with them, you won’t be happy living at Hunter’s West Apartments.
