A Very Brady Bombshell: Florence Henderson’s Tell-All and More Brady Bunch Shockers

Maureen Mccormick

Here’s the story…

Mrs. Brady had an affair, Greg smoked pot and Marcia was a drug addict. Are we in some kind of retro Brady twilight zone?

While we may want to remember the cast of the 1970s sitcom, “The Brady Bunch,” as the wholesome clan they portrayed, the real life actors were anything but. And with the release of Brady matriarch Florence Henderson’s new book, the bombshells continue.

Nearly half of “The Bunch” have written tell-alls, including Barry Williams’ “Growing Up Brady: I Was a Teenage Greg” and Maureen McCormick’s “Here’s the Story: Surviving Marcia Brady and Finding My True Voice.

And while both Williams and McCormick did what they could to destroy their sugary sweet Brady Bunch personas, Brady mom Florence Henderson’s memoir may detail the biggest shocker of all.

In her upcoming book, Life Is Not a Stage, television’s most beloved mom reveals that she cheated on her first husband, Ira Bernstein, in the 1960s and got crabs–from the then-New York City mayor, John Lindsay!

Henderson’s book also tells of her un-Brady like childhood, including growing up in a house that had no electricity or running water and living with an alcoholic father.

As for other Brady shockeroos, in Maureen McCormick’s 2008 tell-all she wrote that she was nothing like her teen dream alter ego, Marcia Brady. Instead of campaigning to be student body president and dating popular boys like Doug Simpson, the real life Marcia struggled with an eating disorder and later became addicted to cocaine. It got so bad she even traded sex for coke.

In 2009 McCormick blogged that there was trouble in Brady paradise–or at least with the show’s middle sister.

After revealing that “Oprah Winfrey Show” producers called to set up a “Brady Bunch” cast reunion , McCormick wrote that all of the Brady “kids” were game, except for her former TV sister, actress Eve Plumb. Rumors of a Brady sister feud quickly swirled.

McCormick wrote: “I hate when there’s trouble in Brady land, and I especially hate that Eve seems to have a problem with me. I have no idea why unless she’s mad at the joke I made a few years ago that we’d had a lesbian love affair. I made the crack to be funny — and for shock value. …The truth is, the two of us were best friends from the start. We had sleepovers, brushed our hair together, talked of boys and snuck cigarettes behind the sound stage.”

But Plumb’s peeps nixed McCormick’s account of what went down. Her agent said, “No one from ‘Oprah’ called. We haven’t turned down anything. There is no feud.”

And in his 1992 tell-all, Barry Williams wrote of his crush on his TV mom (guess he didn’t know about the crabs?) and a pot-smoking stint before filming one of his “Brady” scenes.

The scene, from the episode “Law and Disorder” features a totally stoned Greg Brady as he ad libs lines and trips over a bicycle pump.

Add to that that all of the Brady kids made out with their opposite-sex counterparts at one time or another (ewwwww!) and you’ve got a very dysfunctional bunch o’ Bradys!
