Review of Suave Unscented Pump Hairspray

Hairspray, White Rain

For the past several years, my hairstyle has needed a good strong hairspray to keep it looking nice. I have used aerosols, mainly salon brands, because I like the way they give my hair complete coverage. Pumps sometimes send out droplets of hairspray, giving me undesirable results.

My husband uses Suave unscented non-aerosol hairspray. In fact, it’s the only hairspray he asks me to buy for him, and he has been using it for at least 10 years. He refuses to use any scented hairsprays, and believe it or not, they are becoming increasingly difficult to find. Suave is one of the few brands that still makes a non-aerosol unscented hairspray.

It comes in a 6.5 ounce dark mauve colored container, with a pump spray top. A clear cap covers the dispenser. It comes in different holding levels, we buy number 8, the “max hold”. The bottle states that it “provides long-lasting hold and control for less than more expensive brands”. It also claims that it will never be too stiff or sticky.

Ingredients

SD Alcohol 40-B Alcohol Denat, Water Aqua, Acrylates Copolymer, Aminomethyl Propanol, Dioctyl Sodium Sulfosuccinate, Sodium Benzoate, Dimethicone Copolyol, Cyclopentasiloxane, Masking Fragrance Parfum, Tocopherol Vitamin E, Panthenol, Butylene Glycol, AMP-Isostearoyl Hydrolyzed Soy Protein.

Our Experience with Suave

As I said, this is the only hairspray my husband will use. He does use it in an unorthodox manner however. He sprays it on his hair while it’s still damp, then after it is completely dry, he combs it into the proper style and sprays Suave again. As you can imagine, we go through a lot of this product!

In the past two weeks I have also started using Suave, but also in an unusual way. Because my aerosol hairspray comes out of the can with more pressure than a pump spray, it moves my bangs with it’s force. I have found that if I lightly spray them with the Suave non-aerosol, it “sets” my hair, and then I go over them again with my stronger salon brand of aerosol spray to get the longer lasting hold I desire.

I have tried Suave all by itself, but contrary to their claims, it did not give me long-lasting hold – and it did make my hair a bit stiffer than I like. Using it the way I am, I do get a benefit from it – and my husband loves the way it works on his hair. Of course, he plasters a lot more of it on his hair than I do.

The product truly is unscented, in that it’s free of any perfumes. I do notice an alcohol scent however. That smell does fade after it’s been applied.

Occasionally the spray dispenser will clog and no hairspray will come out. However, if I rinse it off with hot water, that usually solves the problem and unclogs the spray hole. There have been a few times when this didn’t work and I had to pick at it with a toothpick.

The retail price for Suave Unscented Pump Hairspray is $1.99. That’s a pretty good value when compared to the $12-15 I pay for my salon sprays. If you prefer unscented hairsprays, Suave is one of the few we’ve found that we like. White Rain also makes a non-aerosol unscented hairspray, but it left my husbands scalp full of sores. As soon as he discontinued it’s use, they cleared up and went away. We both recommend Suave.
