Worst Baby Gifts to Buy a Mother-to-Be

Stuffed Animals, Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, Toys for Babies

A friend or family member is expecting, and you need to find the perfect gift. When you think of the countless baby items you can pick from, your mind reels. A good place to start in choosing a gift is to know which ones to stay away from. You want your money to be well-spent and your contribution to be appreciated. Read this informative article and find out some of the worst baby gifts to buy a mother-to-be.

1. Stuffed Animals

Stuffed animals are probably the most popular toys in the world. They’re easy to find, they come in every shape and size you can imagine, you can spend a little or a lot on one, and they’re easy to clean. They can usually be tossed in the washer and dryer, and come out looking like new. Children of all ages like stuffed animals, even babies.

On the down side, they may be cute, but they aren’t functional. Stuffed animals take up space. If the eyes, noses, decorative ribbons, or other parts come off, these become choking hazards for baby. They can be suffocation hazards. To help prevent the risk of SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome), items such as stuffed animals and blankets should not be placed in a baby’s crib.

2. Toys That Make Loud Noises

There’s really no need for an explanation on why this makes it as a worst baby gift. I’ll never forget the battery-operated bear my grandson got. It played a few different songs that were designed to soothe baby, I’m sure, and help them drift off to sleep. Unfortunately, my grandson broke into tears every time the loud music started playing. So, this gift went right to the back of the closet right off the bat.

3. Disposable Diapers

On the average, a baby up to 12 months old will go through 5 to 6 diapers a day. That’s a lot of disposable diapers to buy. You may think it’s a good idea to help the mother-to-be defray the cost by choosing these as a gift. The problem is, the expectant mother doesn’t even know what product she’s going to buy yet. It’s going to be based on trial-and-error. Newborn-size may be too small. Some diapers fit better than others to help prevent leaks. And, baby may be allergic to some brands.

4. Outfits That Are Hard to Put On

Another worst baby gift to buy a mother-to-be is any outfit that takes much time and patience to put on. Even though manufacturers make adorable frilly dresses for girls, and little suits with bow ties and vests for boys, these can be a hassle to dress a wiggly baby in. That, and since most little ones spend their time in one-piece sleepers, outfits like these will rarely be worn, and outgrown quickly.
