Why You Shouldn’t Watch Dr Phil

Dr Phil, Sociology

After reading the article Why You Should Watch Dr Phil, I just had to comment. First of all, Dom Coccaro says that he’s 22 and mentions that he is one of the few people his age that watches Dr Phil. I think it’s perfect that I’m 23 and can give my feelings on why you shouldn’t watch Dr Phil. I have actually watched a complete episode and honestly wanted to puke afterwards. Now, I’m not saying there are any other talk show hosts that are any better, especially not Jerry Springer and that garbage that he calls a talk show, but if your significant other slept with your sister, would just want to hug them and make everything okay with your sister? Heck no, but this does seem to be what Dr Phil believes.

I noticed in Mr. Coccaro’s article, he says that Dr Phil deals with these issues by using common sense. This is another reason you shouldn’t be watching Dr Phil. These people who go on Dr Phil’s show obviously have no common sense and if that is all their problems require why do they need a “doctor”? Honestly can these people not fix their problems on their own? If you were having a serious problem with your mother and every time you got around each other you fought, would you want to have some guy looking at you and telling you to talk and work it out and worse than that, hug? Is Dr Phil honestly going to be able to fix problems in less than an hour? No. I often have to think that most of the people who go on these shows really have no problems at all and are probably getting paid a handsome sum to come on there and act like complete morons and be “healed” by Dr Phil. Why do people feel that they need to go on national television and air their dirty laundry, other than being paid? I just cannot believe that Dr Phil changes their lives in such a ground breaking way. We are lead to believe that these people are completely healed, in what, a matter of about 20 minutes? Dr Phil isn’t performing miracles; he’s simply made to look good.

In the article Why You Should Watch Dr Phil, I also noticed Mr. Coccaro talking about how watching Dr Phil was like reading a sociology book. Having taken sociology in college, I would have to say that this would quite possibly be the most boring form of sociology out there. I mean, if you honestly want to see what happens on the Dr Phil show, look into the window of a redneck trailer and you will find this so-called sociology.

Once, just once, I’d love to see someone jump up and punch Dr Phil when he told them to hug this person they had fought with for the past year. Sometimes problems cannot be fixed and people need to realize that. You sometimes have family members that you will constantly fight with and that doesn’t mean you should rush off to be on Dr Phil’s show. Dr Phil isn’t going to be able to fix all of your problems.

After going to Dr Phil’s website I found several topics for upcoming shows. One being, The Worst Fighting Couple in , but it’s not exactly what you think. You might think it simply deals with couples who are arguing, but no this is all about bringing men onto the show who are horrible husbands. Why not just give this topic the name, Horrible Husbands?

I feel bad, shooting down Dom’s article, but Dr Phil is just the most annoying talk show host I’ve ever seen. They should honestly call him Dr Hug because that seems to be his answer for everything. Dr Phil preys on topics that will draw people in. People seem to want to see these people who have horrible problems so they can say, “Well, at least my life isn’t that bad.” People need to realize that the people who go on these shows obviously have no shame or are brainless. If you have a problem in your life with another person and feel that you need to see a doctor, find one in your area. Dragging someone on national television will just makes things must worse; not to mention half of will be laughing at your problems. At least a shrink will be laughing behind your back.
