Why You Shouldn’t Text While You Drive

Texting While Driving

Texting while driving has become a big issue in recent years. Most cellphones have texting features now, and people have become addicted to it. It’s an unsafe behavior while you drive. Here is a several reasons why you shouldn’t text while driving.

Texting while driving is a big safety risk for yourself and other drivers. It not only distracts you, but it also puts other drivers at risk. It’s been compared to drunk driving, due to the poor reaction time that is in both behaviors. Even if you text for a few seconds, it still is risky. A car could be speeding towards you, and you wouldn’t even know due to looking down briefly. You can’t assume you will have quick reflexes, because that’s simply not realistic in every case. An accident can happen quickly and without warning, especially if you aren’t paying attention to the road.

For many years, people survived just fine without cellphones. The same thing now applies to texting. It’s not a necessity in life. It’s just a newer way of communicating for people that don’t want to talk all the time. Text your friends and family when you aren’t driving. Life wont fall apart if you can’t speak to them when you are driving. If there is an emergency, pull your car over to a safe place to text or talk with the person. There is no good reason to put others at risk, just because you enjoy texting.

Many states have noticed these problems with texting and have started to deal with them. Certain states have bans on the behavior. There is fines if you are caught texting while driving. I personally think all states need to put a strict ban in place. However a big part of the problem is catching people doing it. Police aren’t everywhere, so many people get away it. It’s up to the public to change their ways.

Also note, that this doesn’t apply to just drivers of cars. A person was texting while operating a train in Boston not too long ago. Full story here: http://www.boston.com/news/local/breaking_news/2009/05/ems_49_taken_to.html

So next time you think about texting when you drive, please don’t. It doesn’t matter if it’s reading a text or typing something. Every aspect of texting while driving is bad. Think about your safety and everyone else on the road. If you have to text, do it from home. If there is an emergency where you have to text right away when you driving, park somewhere safe before you start texting. People on the road shouldn’t be put at risk because you are distracted. Driving should be distraction free, if this happened many lives would be saved. Your entire focus should be on the road. Keep the roads safe and don’t text while you drive.
