Wendy’s Baja Salad Review

amy's kitchen, Baja, Low Calorie Salad Dressing, Sensa

Wendy’s Baja Salad has a whopping 740 calories and 47 grams of fat — but it’s not a diet catastrophe if you know how to handle the large portion and abundance of toppings.

For my review of the Wendy’s Baja salad, I looked carefully at the fat and calories not only in the salad “base” but in the toppings as well. I’ve determined the best tasting ways to make the Wendy’s Baja Salad a truly skinny choice.

Half of the Wendy’s Baja salad filled me up – which is an accomplishment since I’ve had an insane appetite while doing the Instanity workout. I snacked on a few Pop Chips about three hours after eating the salad and was fine.

Here are tips for enjoying the delicious Baja salad and making it one of the best Wendy’s diet choices with a nice Southwest flair as advertised:

No. 1: How to make the Wendy’s Baja Salad a diet-friendly choice: Start with the salad base which has 550 calories and 33 grams of fat. The base includes iceberg, Romaine and Spring Mix, Wendy’s Chili, Guacamole, Cheddar and Pepper Jack Cheese blend. Make sure you ask for the chili on the side.

No. 2: How to make the Wendy’s Baja Salad a diet-friendly choice: Since the salad is huge, portion out only a half of the salad base and doll out only half of the chili. Or split the salad with friend since Wendy’s doesn’t charge a sharing fee. You now have a delicious, healthful salad with only 225 calories and 16.5 grams of fat. The high fat is partly due to the guacamole with real avocados so it’s healthy monosaturated fat.

No. 3: How to make the Wendy’s Baja Salad a diet-friendly choice: Skip the seasoned Tortilla Strips with 80 calories or add half to your half salad, bringing your revised calorie total (half salad/half chili) now to 265 calories. In keeping with the Voluemtrics approach, eat more lettuce and less dense foods such as the tortilla strips.

No. 4: How to make the Wendy’s Baja Salad a diet-friendly choice: Skip the red jalapeno dressing with 100 calories. I don’t know why the dressing is necessary since the chili provides a dressing, but if you really want the dressing use half for a revised calorie total of 315 calories (this is based on the half salad/half chili recommendation). If you are having trouble eating only half, try sprinkling Sensa on the salad to decrease your appetite.

No. 5: How to make the Wendy’s Baja Salad a diet-friendly choice: Don’t pair your salad with diet soda since diet sodas with artificial sweeteners have been shown to increase appetite. You may find yourself wanting the entire Wendy’s Baja Salad with 740 calories and 47 grams of fat.

Other best Wendy’s choices on a diet include the Garden Sensations Salads: BLT Cobb, Apple Pecan Chicken and Spicy Chicken Caesar salad.

I’ve had the Wendy’s Baja Salad three times, and love the spring mix lettuces as well as the guacamole with what taste like fresh avocados. It tastes like the guacamole I’d make at home!
