If you are looking for a fun new way to share your wedding cake with your guest, then you have to try making these Mini Sunflower Shaped Cakes. Your wedding guests can each have their own whole cake served to them on individual plates.

This is an elegant and new twist on the traditional summer wedding cake ideas.

I am always looking for fun and new garden wedding cake ideas. There are so many possibilities.

You can use this edible Mini Sunflower Shaped Wedding Cakes for a great gift for someone special as well. They would be well suited for a special dinner for two, or even a get well soon treat.

To Make Mini Sunflower Shaped Wedding Cakes You Will need:

1 of your favorite boxed white cake mixes

1 – 2 Tub of Vanilla icing

White Tube Writing Icing (2 to 3 tubes)

1 Sunflower shaped cookie cutter (about 4 inches wide)

Bake your favorite cake mix as usual. You need to bake it in a 13″ X 9″ baking pan. You can bake two cakes (or more for a large wedding) and cut them out exactly the same to make a large number of Mini Sunflower Shaped Wedding Cakes.

Once the cake has cooled flip it out of the baking pans onto a large platter, carving board, or whatever you have.

Now, stick the cake in the freezer for about 20 to 30 minutes. You want to slightly freeze is, but not freeze it completely. This will help you cut it into the shape of the Mini Sunflower Shaped Wedding Cakes.

Now, use a Sunflower shaped cookie cutter to cut out the Mini Sunflower Shaped Wedding Cakes on the sheet cake. Simply press the cookie cutter in like you would cookie dough.

You should find this sheet cake cuts easily into the shape of these Mini Sunflower Shaped Wedding Cakes since it is chilled and slightly frozen. This will make the cake much more easy to cut and get crisp clean edges of the small Sunflowers.

Now, you really should go ahead and place these simple Mini Sunflower Shaped Wedding Cakes on a board or serving platter before you decorate it. You will not be able to move it once you decorate it or you will ruin it.

Now, take your 1 tub of the icing. You can use any colors that you want to match your summer wedding. To make these daises elegant I recommend leaving them in white and outline in whit piping icing. You may need both tubs (or more) to adequacy cover a large number Mini Sunflower Shaped Wedding Cakes.

Coat the entire Mini Sunflower Shaped Wedding Cakes with a thick coat of icing. Use your spatula or butter knife to make the icing really smooth and flat. The more smooth the better. In fact if you like working with fondant icing, that would be the best, but you can use regular canned icing for this. Reserve some icing aside for touch ups later.

Tip: You may find it easier to apply a thin coat of icing to the entire Mini Sunflower Shaped Wedding Cakes. Then place the wedding cakes in the refrigerator for about an hour.

Once this thin layer has chilled apply another thicker coat of white vanilla icing. This first coat is called the crumb coat for obvious reasons. This is a great way that the wedding cake professionals use to get a clean smooth surface of icing on their summer wedding cakes.

Now for the real fun. You get to decorate your Mini Sunflower Shaped Wedding Cakes. Apply a second smooth coat of your butter cream or vanilla icing.

To garnish take your tube of matching white icing and outline your Sunflower. You can first circle around the center circle and then outline each petal.

Tip: If you are scared of making this center circle of the Sunflower take a small round cookie cutter and gently press it in the center o the cake. This will make an outline for you to follow.

So, if you want you can make this Sunflower cake in any color, to make it look elegant be sure to pipe on the outlines in the same color though!

You can also use edible pearls from the cake-decorating aisle to fill in the center circle.

The look is timeless and perfect for any garden wedding cake!
