Top 15 Best Cartoons of the ’90s

Cartoons, Space Ghost

Whenever somebody makes a list of the best cartoons of all-time the list usually centers around the cartoons of the ’80s. The ’80s were a golden age of cartoons with classics like Transformers and G. I. Joe, movies that are currently getting remade into movies now. The ’90s also had some very good cartoons and most of them are overlooked but maybe we’ll be seeing some of these shows make comebacks in another 10 years. These are the 15 best cartoons of the ’90s.

Top 15 Best Cartoons of the 90’s: Eek the Cat
Eek the Cat was a solid Saturday morning cartoon. The Eek the Cat cartoons themselves were just okay but during them there was a segment featuring the Terrible Thunderlizards that was always more enjoyable than the Eek the Cat cartoon.

Top 15 Best Cartoons of the ’90s: Doug
Who could ever forget that little dweeb Doug and his friend Skeeter, who for some reason has blue skin. Is he a mutant or something? Did he get lost on his way to the X-men cartoon. Oh well, I’ll just forget about it and jam to some Killer Tofu.

Top 15 Best Cartoons of the ’90s: Talespin
Take a beloved character from a Disney movie, put him in a cartoon, make him a pilot and have him face sky pirates. Brilliant! Maybe next they’ll make a television series about Sebastian from Little Mermaid becoming a train conductor on a train full of zombies.

Top 15 Best Cartoons of the ’90s: Tiny Toon Adventures
Miniature versions of the classic Looney Tunes characters sounded like a horrible idea and there was no way it could live up to the original but Tiny Toon Adventures turned out to be a pretty fun show with a catchy theme song.

Top 15 Best Cartoons of the ’90s: Animaniacs
Animaniacs was a weird show at times but also very fun. Dot did the polka, Wakko burped his favorite songs and Yakko taught me all of the countries in the world. There were other cartoons that were a part of Animaniacs too but more on that later.

Top 15 Best Cartoons of the ’90s: Spider-man: the Animated Series
There have been many Spider-man television shows over the past couple of decades but none have been better than the animated Spider-man from the 90’s. Spider-man did something completely different in that, much like a comic book, every episode was part of a story. There were a few seasons of Spider-man where the entire season was a 13 part story.

Top 15 Best Cartoons of the ’90s: Pinky and the Brain
One of the cartoons that appeared in the Animaniacs was Pinky and the Brain. Pinky and the Brain were so popular that they got their own spin off. The Brain was a mouse with a very high IQ that would think up plots to take over the world. Unfortunately his stupid sidekick, Pinky, always ruins his plans.

Top 15 Best Cartoons of the ’90s: Darkwing Duck
After the success of Ducktales the natural thing to do next is to make a duck superhero. Darkwing Duck was created and he was joined by everybody’s favorite awful pilot, Launchpad McQuack. Just like any good superhero Darkwing had a great cast of villains like Megavolt, Bushroot and Darkwing’s evil twin Negaduck.

Top 15 Best Cartoons of the ’90s: Spongebob Squarepants
It’s hard to believe that Spongebob Squarepants started in the 90’s. Spongebob is still one of the best children cartoons on television.

Top 15 Best Cartoons of the ’90s: Beavis and Butthead
Beavis and Butthead was like the Science Mystery Theater of the 90’s except instead of making fun of movies they made fun of music videos. The cartoons in between the videos had their moments but the videos were the best part of the cartoon.

Top 15 Best Cartoons of the ’90s: X-Men the Animated Series
The X-Men animated series was a great cartoon that was very faithful to the comic book. Seeing Wolverine on the television for the first time was one of the best television experiences of my childhood. Too bad I’m sick of the guy now.

Top 15 Best Cartoons of the ’90s: Space Ghost Coast to Coast
Forget about Jay Leno, David Letterman or Conan O’Brien. The best talk show host during the 90’s was Space Ghost. Space Ghost had classic interviews with Randy “Macho Man” Savage, Tenacious D, Bjork and many others.

Top 15 Best Cartoons of the ’90s: The Tick
The Tick was another cartoon based on a comic book. The Tick is a parody of superheroes with an aloof hero and his cowardly sidekick. Throughout the series there are many colorful characters like Chairface Chippendale, a villain with a chair for a head. Or there is Caped Chameleon, a super hero that changes colors depending on the background behind him.

Top 15 Best Cartoons of the ’90s: The Simpsons
Honestly I never watched the Simpsons back in the 90’s, and I’m not a fan of the show now, but you can’t deny that it is one of the most popular cartoons and one of the best cartoons of all-time.

Top 15 Best Cartoons of the ’90s: Batman: the Animated Series
There were many cartoons based on comic books in the 90’s but none of them were as good as Batman the Animated Series. The Batman cartoon stayed very faithful to the subject even though it was darker than your typical cartoon.
