Why the Original Transformers Movie was Better Than the New Transformers Movie

Optimus Prime, Orson Welles, The 80's, Transformers, Transformers Movie

One of the biggest blockbusters of 2007 was the Transformers movie. Some fans seemed to enjoy the Transformers movie for some reason while others, like myself, felt like the great Transformers name was ruined. For those of you who agree with me may or may not be familiar with the animated movie that came out with the 80’s. If you haven’t seen the animated movie from the 80’s then you should because it’s the better movie. Here are some reasons that the 80’s movie was better than the 2007 movie.

1. Orson Welles
The Transformers movies featured an aging Orson Welles as the voice of the main villain, Unicron. Orson Welles has an incredible resume including an Academy Award and is one of the greatest screenwriters and radio, film and theatre directors. Fans were excited when they found out Peter Cullen would be voicing Optimus Prime in the new movie but even that pales in comparison to Orson Welles doing the first movie. The Transformers movie would actually be Orson Welles very last performance.

2. Optimus Prime dies
If you’ve read my Optimus Prime is a worse leader than George W article then you would probably be able to tell that I’m not a big fan of Optimus Prime. Optimus Prime is easily the most overrated 80’s cartoon character. Optimus Prime is not smart, doesn’t know any strategy, gets his butt kicked and is a lousy leader. So when Optimus Prime dies in the first movie it was truly a glorious moment.

3. Grimlock
Robots that turn into vehicles are one thing, but nothing is better than robots that turn into dinosaurs. The Dinobots are classic members of the Transformers but are nowhere to be found in the new movie. But in the old 80’s movie the leader of the Dinobots is front and center for most of the movie.

4. The cartoon was less cartoonish
It’s sad but true. The cartoon version of Transformers was actually less cartoonish than the incredibly silly 3D Transformers. In the 80’s Transformers movie there was no role call that including dancing and trying to be cool. In the 80’s Transformers movie there was no playing hide and go seek in the garden of one of the humans. In the 80’s Transformers movie there was locking an FBI agent to a lamppost in his under garments. In the 80’s Transformers movie there was no little annoying Decepticon doing his best Jar Jar impression.

5. Better Representation
The 80’s Transformers movie is easily the better representation of the Transformers cartoon. Nobody would expect the new movie to be exactly like the old Transformers cartoon, but they also didn’t have to change it into something that isn’t Transformers. You can’t make Devastator and not make him a combiner Transformer. You can’t make Bumblebee and then not have him talk. You can’t turn the Transformers into the Three Stooges. You can’t make Optimus Prime let one of his Autobots get captured. That just isn’t Transformers. The 80’s movie was Transformers and will always be the real Transformers movie.
