Introduction

I have already discussed many of the healthiest foods. Ice cream is not a health food, but Tofutti is a healthy ice cream substitute because it has no lactose and no cholesterol.

Shown above is the data on cream cheese, which is similar. Cream cheese has a lot of fat and a little bit of carbohydrates. It is an animal product, so it is not on the vegan diet. It does not have the sugar that is in ice cream, but it does have calcium.

I give cream cheese a “D” grade because it is inexpensive and tastes good. It can make you fat, which is part of the down side.

Shown above is cream itself. It has no fiber, which is bad. It has lactose, which is bad for anyone with lactose intolerance. On the positive side, it has calcium. The data is from the USDA (Dept. of Agriculture). I give cream a “D”. It does have fat soluble vitamins, which is why it doesn’t get an “F. These fat soluble vitamins are valuable, but I prefer to get them from vegan foods.

Clearly there is a lot of sugar in ice cream. There is a lot of fat, and much of it is bad fat. I have to give ice cream a “D”. One of the few foods that are even worse is lard. Even margarine is not good because it has trans fats.

My recommendation is to use tofu or rice substitutes. One is called “Soy Cream”. Even these will have sugar, but they are a heck of a lot better in the quality of the fats.
