The Best Punk Rock Songs

90's Music, Punk Rock, Smashing Pumpkins

Punk Rock rocks! A whole genre of music about being rebellious! Here are the top twenty punk rock songs of all time dating back to the 90s. I was born in 86′ so I grew up with the 90s music, which I think is the best! The 90s presented a whole new attitude. However, not all of the songs on my list are from the 90s. Tell me if you agree, why or why not.

1. “All the Small Things” – Blink 182
The title says it all. All the small things in life are the best!

2. “Where Eagles Dare” – The Misfits
This song is one of the most raw punk rock songs of all time. The Misfits are so blunt about what they want to say, and I respect that so much. They just get straight to the point.

3. “Teen Spirit” – Nirvana
The title says it all. If teens had a spirit how would it act? This is what this song expresses and I think it was intelligently written. Of course I think Nirvana is just divine anyway. But this song is expressive of acting out and being an entertainer to those who turn up their nose. This song is spiritual to me; makes me feel connected and understood.

4. “New Rose” – The Damned
Old song, but really super cool! The electric in this song is awesome and sounds like it’s being played by the coolest kid who just skipped school. This song makes you want to just bang your head

5.”American Idiot” – Green Day
Americans are idiots, and in this song he’s saying he doesn’t want to be one of them. The guitar in this song is pretty blunt and raw, like most of Green Day’s songs.

6. “I Can’t Get My Head Around You” – The Offspring
Cool song about how he just doesn’t understand her. I like it because it’s so typical of guy and girl to misunderstand each other.

7. Tonight, tonight” – Smashing Pumpkins
Amazing! The music in this song combined with the sound of his voice is just celestial. This song seems on the spiritual side, notice I didn’t say religious. I keep saying that I know but what that means is that it touches me, has a deep meaning, or enlightens and connects you to a world outside of ours. This song is hard to analyze, but I think it is about possibility. Tonight, things can be different if only we believe. The video is good to watch and puts the meaning behind the song into perspective. The Smashing Pumpkins have very insightful songs about life and reality.

8. “Complicated” – Avril Lavigne
I really just like Avril Lavigne because I think she’s a cool girl with a cool style. She looks punk rock, acts punk rock, does punk rock, is punk rock. This song is simply about people being so complicated and not being simple, but really she sounds like an annoyed, angry girl, which is punk rock attitude and I like it!

9. “All Apologies” – Nirvana
Kurt Cobain is using his classic sarcasm in this song. He’s basically apologizing for things he should not be apologizing for as a way to say, leave me alone! People don’t like me? What should I do about it? Feel ashamed, apologize, and change my ways? He’s saying no way I’m gonna change who I am just because you don’t like it. Again, amazing, brilliant, and spiritual for me.

10. “Blood Pig” – Otep
More of a heavy metal band, but may still be considered punk. This song is a lot about failure and anger as a lot of Oteps songs are. It is just amazingly awesome! It’s deep and spiritual, and if you listen to the lyrics you will be blown away by the intensity.

11.”1979″ – Smashing Pumpkins
Just happy carefree kids running around with no problems in the world. Perfect song. I love it because it gives me a good feeling to listen to it. The weird thing is that it’s kind of depressive, but happy at the same time. Like, the world is so sad and messed up, but we don’t care.

12. “Heart Shaped Box” – Nirvana
Very powerful song with multi-meanings. I believe this song is interpretive and if you watch the video you will realize that there is a deep spiritual meaning behind the song. I think that it’s about false love vs. real love. I believe Kurt Cobain was trying to express that the one love is all that’s real, and perhaps romantic love is a joke.

13. “Ghost Flowers” – Otep
‘She’s picking us flowers from her soul’ are some of the lyrics in this song. Wow! Ghost flowers may be deeper than any of Nirvana’s songs. This song was meant to connect you. That’s all I’m gonna say, you have to listen to it for yourself because if I say more you will think I’m crazy.

14. “Punk Rock Princess” – Something Corporate
Just a kinda cute punk rock song. I just think it’s cute. This song is for like pre-teens or something, but I still like it because it reminds me of my first crushes and takes me back to middle school.

15. “She’s So High” – Tal Bachman
So this guy thinks highly of this girl. It’s a very sweet song. He kinda feels like she’s better than him.

16. “Iris” – Goo Goo Dolls
This song is such a beautiful love song because it’s full of pain. The guy knows he can’t be with her, and all he wants is for her to know him. So sad : (

17. My Hero” – Foo Fighters
Of course I would pick this song because it is a tribute to Kurt Cobain, but the cool thing is that it doesn’t sound sad, but more positive. The Foo Fighters have an upbeat sound anyway.

18. “Mary Jane’s Last Dance” – Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers
I think this song is about marijuana, but some people disagree with me. He talks about killing the pain, so it makes sense. Anyway, I like the sound of it whether it’s about a girl or a plant. It sounds mystical to me.

19. “Drops of Jupiter” – Train
What a cool song! The piano is such a great asset to this song. It’s about a girl who is deeply admired and I think it is so romantic. He uses the universe and seasons to describe her, how sweet!

20. “Everything Will Never Be Okay” – Fiction Plane
Very blunt song about how everything will never be okay, quote: ‘There will always be a part of you in pain’. I like this song because it tells the truth about life. People wanna make things out to be roses and bunny rabbits, but thanks to Fiction Plane, we know the truth.
