Romantic Comedies / Chick Flicks of 2010

Chick Flicks, Matthew Goode

2010 sounds to be a promising and exciting year for the female moviegoers. The world of romantic comedies has been explored to death but there’s a reason why they’re still getting made. Yes, we’ve seen the plot a thousand times and we always see the ending coming miles away but it’s the warm and gooey process of getting there that makes us pay to see these chick flicks in the theaters. So what if they never happen in real life? So what if a guy like that does not exist? I guess most of us are just idealists at heart.

1. Leap Year (January 8) – Amy Adams and Matthew Goode star in this predictable but irresistible romantic comedy. The premise is about a woman who intends to take part in an interesting Irish tradition, wherein the girl proposes to her boyfriend on the 29th of February, hence the title Leap Year. Adams has certainly proved her worth when it comes to acting and choosing the right roles for her. We can only hope this vehicle will make her star shine brighter.

2. When in Rome (January 29) – The trailer sure is comical and hilarious, two good adjectives if you want your romantic movie to attract the male crowd as well. It stars Kristen Bell and Josh Duhamel, two refreshing and attractive actors who have yet to prove they can carry a film on their own. The plot is an entertaining one: Bell’s character steals a few coins from this magical fountain of Rome and is punished in a twisted way – men of all types started pursuing her in extreme manners. Expect chick flick lovers to line up for this one, with boyfriends in tow of course.

3. Valentine’s Day (February 12) – This aptly-titled film have garnered a lot of publicity mainly for its stars. Who hasn’t heard about Taylors Swift and Lautner developing a romance on set? Other eye candy but worthy actors in the cast include Anne Hathaway, Bradley Cooper, Jessica Biel, Jessica Alba, Ashton Kutcher, Jennifer Garner, Julia Roberts, Patrick Dempsey, and the list goes on and on. With a cast like this, who needs to know the plot, right? The interconnecting stories are certain to be cheesy and romantic, but you wouldn’t want anything less for a Valentine date movie.

4.The Back-Up Plan (March 12) – This Jennifer Lopez starrer will delight her fans who missed her in the big screen. Her last romantic comedy vehicle was Monster-in-Law back in 2005. In this film, she plays a woman who was artificially inseminated by a donor sperm. After conceiving, she then met Mr. Right. What a dilemma! What is a girl to do? Watch J.Lo bring on the laughs (or cringes) this coming spring.

5. Date Night (April 9) – This is more of a comedy movie with romantic undertones, as it stars two big names in the comedy genre, Tina Fey and Steve Carrell. They play a married couple, whose plans of a romantic and quiet date night turned into a crazy and dangerous adventure in New York City, thanks to a case of mistaken identity. This might be the one chick flick on the list that you’re boyfriend will be into seeing.

6. Sex and the City 2 (May 28) – With that in mind, you might get this response from your boyfriend after suggesting this flick, “I won’t be caught dead in a theater showing this one.” Or a more respectful, “I’ll pass.” So better make it a movie night just with the girls. Following the success of the series and the first film comes the inescapable sequel. Our favorite fashionistas headed by Sarah Jessica Parker all return to reprise their roles. Small details gathered from the movie set are actually headline news, the bigger of which are cameos from Liza Minnelli and Miley Cyrus. Plot details are still sketchy, which of course only builds up the hype and suspense for this movie.

7. Going the Distance (October 8) – Real-life couple Drew Barrymore and Justin Long star in this romantic comedy scheduled for the fall. It explores long-distance relationships, which is a very relatable topic and is rarely touched on in movies. The familiarity of the co-stars with one another may just provide for the spark and chemistry needed. Will you see this on the big screen?

There’s nothing like a good romantic comedy to cure your cynicism when it comes to love and relationships. Let’s hope these movies will give us a good time at the cinema.
