Pixar just seems to be getting better and better about appealing to adults and children alike, so this will definitely be one of the summer comedies of 2010 that will appeal to a wide audience. In what could be an exception to the “third time is not a charm” trilogy rule, the toys will accidentally end up in a daycare, the perfect opportunity to introduce new toys (like a fabulous Ken doll, some adorable peas-in-a-pod, and a Triceratops named Trixie that might just be a love interest for Rex), as well as one of a toy’s worst enemies: babies. So don’t miss one of the only funniest summer movies of 2010 that will be in 3-D when this wild ride hits theaters on June 18, 2010.
Grown Ups – And now here’s one of the funniest summer movies of 2010 made especially for grown-ups. Hopefully the director of movies like ‘You Don’t Mess with the Zohan’ and ‘I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry’ will grow up just a little bit for this film penned by Adam Sandler, a tale of old high school friends who reunite thirty years after graduation for a Fourth of July weekend together. Adam Sandler also stars in the film (in which he inexplicably gets to play Salma Hayek’s hubby) alongside fellow comedians David Spade, Kevin James, Rob Scheinder, and Chris Rock. While I know that having an impressive cast does not a funny movie make (just look at ‘Funny People’), I’m going to give this one the benefit of the doubt and say that it could surprise us by being one of the funniest summer movies of 2010 in hopes that all of these comedians will get their groove back, and I’m betting at least it will at least be one of the best summer buddy comedies when it hits theaters on June 25, 2010.
Despicable Me – Here’s another of what could be one of the funniest animated summer movies of 2010 that I’m most looking forward to, one that could possibly compete with Pixar’s latest thanks to a refreshingly unique storyline. Steve Carell voices a villain named Gru, who is plotting the big heist in history: to steal the moon. However, three little orphan girls who see the evil genius as a potential dad just might stop him from making our nights a whole lot darker. It’s another of the summer comedies here that I think the whole family will love, and it should be fun to see the world through the eyes of a supervillain when it hits theaters on July 9, 2010.
Dinner for Schmucks – And here’s another of the funniest summer movies of 2010 starring Steve Carell. But here he’s not the bad guy; Paul Rudd kind of is. In the movie, he plays an executive who is invited to his company’s “dinner for idiots”, where employees are awarded for finding the biggest buffoon to bring as their guest. He seemingly lucks out in discovering Steve Carell’s character, a guy whose favorite hobby is building taxidermy dioramas with dead mice. However, once he befriends the buffoon, he just can’t get him off his back, and the poor guy’s good intentions have a profound (and crazy) effect on his life. I’m betting this will probably be one of the best summer comedies of 2010 with this great team, seeing as how it’s also directed by Jay Roach (‘Meet the Parents’ and the Austin Powers movies). However, I hope one of the funniest summer comedies of 2010 doesn’t inspire a copycat culture of corporate bigwigs holding their own dinners for schmucks when it hits theaters on July 23, 2010.
Micmacs – It’s too bad this fun-looking film will only be in limited release, as I really believe that the latest by Jean-Pierre Jeunet (the director of ‘Amelie’) will be one of the funniest and most refreshing summer movies of 2010. It’s the odd tale of a video store clerk with a bullet lodged in his brain who decides to try to take down two big weapons manufacturers with the help of his friends. I really am looking forward to seeing more of Jeunet’s playful cinematic art splashed across the silver screen (the trailer is truly visually stunning), and I’m really hoping I can find a theater nearby that will be playing one of the best summer comedies of 2010 when the race to rid the world of weapons begins on May 28, 2010.
Get him to the Greek – There’s something oddly alluring about Katy Perry’s peg-leg jean-wearing pirate, and I think that crass comedian Russell Brand could help make this seeming remake of ‘My Favorite Year’ one of the funniest summer movies of 2010. Jonah Hill stars as a record company intern who has to drag an obnoxious, hard-partying rock star (Brand) to the Greek Theatre in L.A. for a performance, but Brand seems hell-bent on making this difficult for the duo, choosing to look for the meaning of life and the love of his life instead of worrying about continuing with his career. Add Aziz Ansari of ‘Parks and Recreation’ fame to the mix, and I think ‘Forgetting Sarah Marshall’ director Nicholas Stoller will have no problem getting audiences to theaters with one of the year’s best summer comedies when it hits theaters on June 4, 2010.
MacGruber – Admittedly, most SNL movies are utter failures, but a MacGyver
spoof is just too much fun to pass up. It may not be the funniest of the summer movies of 2010 on this list, but for those of us that miss 60’s throwback spy spoof Austin Powers, this caricature of one of our favorite 80’s icons will hopefully make an equally as tasteless adequate replacement while we wait for that fourth installment. So if you’re looking for low-brow comedies full of action and you’re a hardcore SNL fan, you might find this one of the funniest summer movies of 2010 when it hits theaters on May 21st; it’s just a shame most people watching it won’t have a clue who MacGyver is.
Cyrus -Sorry, kiddies, Miley doesn’t have a biopic just yet; what looks like one of the funniest summer movies of 2010 is instead about a man who meets the girl of his dreams. Unfortunately, she seems to be attached at the hip to her adult son. The cast is what could make this one of the best summer comedies of 2010, with Catherine Keener, Marisa Tomei, and John C. Reilly making up this dysfunctional movie family. Be sure not to miss this love song to momma’s boys on July 9, 2010.
The Other Guys – One cop comedy of 2010 has already come and gone, but will the other guys’ police work better that of Tracy Morgan and Bruce Willis? I certainly hope so, although we’re talking about the director of ‘Step Brothers’ helming this competing cop comedy. However, I think Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg will make a fun crime-stopping duo. One has an itchy trigger finger and one prefers paperwork to hitting the streets, but they’re going to do their best to outdo the big boy cops (Samuel L. Jackson and Dwayne Johnson). I’m not entirely sure that this will be one of the funniest summer movies of 2010, but I think it deserves a chance just like its not-so-dynamic detective duo on August 6.
Scott Pilgrim vs. The World – And here’s one of the funniest summer movies of 2010 that fanboys are most looking forward to, a fun-looking flick based on the Scott Pilgrim comic books. Film fave Michael Cera stars in the titular role, a garage band bassist who becomes the boyfriend of the girl of his dreams, only to discover that he has to do battle with all of her evil exes out to kill him. So can he defeat her annoying skateboarding and vegetable-munching exes?
