Review: Shrek Operation Game for Kids

I have always liked Shrek movies (except for the last one which sort of sucked), this past weekend though instead of popping in the DVD for my niece and nephew, we instead took a trip to Blockbuster video to rent games. My niece had her heart set on playing she Shrek game for the wii.

Well the game was not in stock. That’s when another Shrek game caught my eye. On a table at the front of the store they had an entire Shrek merchandise sale. Shrek Monopoly, Shrek plush animals, and Shrek card games. I was interested in none of these items…but one. Shrek Operation.

Oh, visions of my childhood began to swirl through my mind. I remember my original Operation game. I remember my sick looking patient, I remember removing bones from his body, and I also remember a tickle in my hand if I botched the operation. For me though it was more like a shock, an awful shock. Then the buzzing noise would ring through my ears as my patients red bulb nose lit up.

“Do you guys have this game at home?” I asked.
“Nope”
“What!? You have never played Operation!? You have got to be kidding me!” Was my reply.

What has my sister been doing to these kids!? No Operation game! Oh no… these kids cannot have a childhood without this game (a bit over-dramatized, but thats how I felt at the time).

I purchased the game for $19.99. It was a bit high, but it was for a good cause. The kids…yeah, the um… kids (I really wanted it for myself, tee-hee).

I also purchased 2 AA batteries, which you will need if you plan on playing Shrek Operation. Don’t forget the freaking batteries!

Anyhow at home I opened the box and began setting up the game. My niece could not keep her mitts off of ‘my’ game, so I had to punish her. She didn’t get to play (that was a sick cruel joke, in case you were wondering).

No really, neither of them could keep their hands off of the small plastic pieces. I had to keep a close eye on them because they tend to roam with pieces, they are famous for losing the last piece for puzzles.

The Shrek Operation board was cute. It featured Shrek lying on a bed. The Shrek is flat, and holes are cut within his body. These are where the plastic bones and small white pieces go.

After the small pieces are in their slots, you then can begin the game.

For those who don’t know how Operation works, I’ll explain.

In the game you are to pick up cards that will tell you what operation you are to preform. If you can pick up the bone from Shreks body holes with the attached tweezers, without hitting the side walls you win however much money the card says.

If you hit the walls the board will buzz, and it almost feels like you got a bitty shock. Shrek’s nose will also light up red if you hit the walls.

The Shrek version of Operation, is the same concept as the original game we all remember and love. The only difference is, it’s Shrek themed.

In this game you will remove toe jam, grubs, and other ogre/Shrek themed yuckies.

Overall:

Shrek Operation provided us a few good solid hours of fun. My niece and nephew cracked up in laughter every time someone made Shrek’s nose turn red. It was a good time, and game time was possibly memory storage worthy for the kids.

I highly recommend this game to those who are fans of Shrek, or to those who just want to bring back some nostalgic gaming.

Shrek Operation was money well spent.
