Product Review: Edy’s Slow Churned Ice Cream

Dreyers, edy's, Low Fat Ice Cream, Vanilla, Vanilla Bean

I am always amazed at the quantity of selections and choices available in grocery store shelves; not to mention the enormity of choices for low fat ice cream. I almost always go by the principle ‘everything in moderation’ when it comes to food, and ice cream should be no exception. However, I do take a different stand when it comes to ice cream; simply because I cannot live without a daily (yes, daily) dose of vanilla ice cream. I don’t know if it just puts me to sleep after a long day, or it’s just a ‘favorite treat’ but I probably go through at least a ½ gallon per week. Given my higher-than-average consumption level, I found it wise to seek out only the best to take care of my vanilla need. Plus, a healthy version was necessary so as not to completely negate my workouts and health-conscious eating style.

And so I find Edy’s Slow Churned Ice Cream beckoning from afar with the candy-striped lid and Edy’s brand endorsement. Edy’s Slow Churned Ice Cream is a featured item this summer, offering a low fat and creamy alternative to a large portion of the regular Edy’s flavors. I am a simple vanilla fan; nothing more. But yet, I still have choices: Vanilla, Vanilla Bean, and French Vanilla. Plain vanilla is a standard, medium-flavored vanilla cream. Vanilla Bean has the added bonus of real vanilla bean segments dispersed amongst the rich cream. French Vanilla, is just the addition of extra sugar and a distinctive flavoring I couldn’t quite catch; it also has ground vanilla beans. Still, my top choice is the regular Vanilla Bean; it’s as classic and creamy as you can get.

The Vanilla Bean Slow Churned flavor is available in almost all markets, and is lowfat heaven. This rich and creamy ice cream is comparable to high-end lines such as Breyer’s and some premium flavors from Blue Bunny. The Vanilla Bean Slow Churned flavor is appealing in texture, has a rich smooth finish, and a well-balanced but strong vanilla flavoring. Combined with the real ground vanilla beans, this is a surefire hit for all vanilla lovers. It’s difficult to tell that this is a “light’ version, with only 3.5g of fat per serving and 100 calories. Compare this to 12 g of fat and 190 calories in a standard vanilla ice cream serving, and clearly there’s a difference. Multiply that by seven days, four weeks, and well, you get the picture! I was impressed, and very excited about my new discovery. This is the tastiest low fat ice cream I have found to date.

Edy’s also offers a variety of irresistible flavors for those who prefer something a little more adventurous; try the Raspberry Chip Royale, Double Fudge Brownie, Cherry Chocolate chip, Caramel Delight, French Silk, Orange & Cream, or Peanut Butter Cup. The possibilities for sundaes and milkshakes never end! The Vanilla Chocolate is another addition, with a simple duo of regular vanilla and chocolate ripples.

Edy’s Slow Churned flavors are worth a try, and offer a variety of flavors and tastes. Edy’s reports that all flavors are With 50% less fat and 30% fewer calories than regular ice cream, and this fact doesn’t compromise taste, texture, or flavor whatsoever!
