A few nights ago, while standing in line at a Hartford, Connecticut CVS Pharmacy, I noticed a couple of people holding blue – colored bags of M & M’s chocolate candies. I couldn’t help but overhear them saying what a great idea it was to introduce the new Pretzel M & M’s candies. Since I have always been a fan of regular – style M & M’s, I wondered how Pretzel M & M’s would taste.
Located approximately ten feet from where I was standing, was a large, plastic barrel filled with single – serving size, bright blue bags of M & M’s. I had never seen this variety of M & M’s before, so I picked up one of the bags and saw that it was labeled “Pretzel M & M’s. In small letters, near the top of the package, are the words ‘Crunchy, Salty, Sweet”, which reminds me of the sweet and salty granola bars that I have been seeing advertised on television recently.
Because I was curious as to how these candies tasted, I decided to purchase a package of the new, Pretzel M & M’s. As soon as I bought the candies, I realized that the opportunity for a product review was presenting itself. I paid close attention to every detail and factor regarding these candies and have decided to write an article which reviews and examines Pretzel M & M’s. Presented here, in an effort to assist the consumer, is one food writer’s product review of the new, Pretzel M & M’s chocolate candies.
Size The net weight of the single serving package of Pretzel M & M’s is 1.14 ounces (32.3 grams). According to the package nutrition label, the package contains one serving of candy. In physical size, the package is roughly the same size as a single serving bag of regular – style M & M’s. The individual pieces of Pretzel M & M’s are pretty big, they are close in size to Peanut M & M’s.
Nutritional Facts Pretzel M & M’s contain 150 calories, with 45 calories from fat, per one package serving (32.3 grams). These candies also contain 3 grams of saturated fat, 0 grams trans fat, 5 grams total fat, 0 mg of cholesterol, 150 mg of sodium, 24 grams total carbohydrates, 1 gram of dietary fiber, 16 grams of sugars and 2 grams of protein, per one package serving.
Price The regular retail price charged for one single serving package of Pretzel M & M’s at Hartford, Connecticut area retailers is approximately $.89c. That price is actually pretty average, as far as single serving candy items are concerned.
Texture The texture of Pretzel M & M’s iis somewhat a bone of contention for me. I really like the texture of regular – style and Peanut M & M’s, but the texture of the Pretzel M & M’s disappointed me. The colored candy shell on the outside of the candies is very similar to other types of M& M’s, but the pretzel in the middle of the chocolate inside, seems very hard to me. Perhaps because I have had extensive dental work done, I try to be very aware of how hard various foods are and try to avoid biting – down on very hard foods.
As soon as I tried to bite down on the pretzel center, the amount of resistance that I encountered, dissuaded me from fully biting down. To me, the pretzels in these candies are way too hard, they almost seem like rocks to me. After eating all of the surrounding chocolate, I took a look at some of the pretzels inside of these candies and was amazed to see what they looked like. The pretzel centers in Pretzel M & M’s are small, roundish, pretzel pellets, that to me, look like little acorns. Personally, I think that if a softer pretzel was used in these candies, it would be a big improvement.
Taste / Flavor I have mixed feelings concerning the taste of the new Pretzel M & M’s. Since I am a longtime fan of M & M’s, it would make sense that I would like the flavor of their new variety at least a little bit. Unfortunately, that’s about how much I like the flavor of the Pretzel M & M’s. The colored candy shells taste like those found on regular and Peanut M & M’s and the chocolate filling tastes just as good as the chocolate in the other varieties, but it seems like there is less of it, because of the mini pretzel that is contained in the center of the candy. Maybe it’s just that I don’t really see the appeal of combining chocolate and pretzels in a candy, but I definitely prefer the flavor of regular and Peanut M & M’s over the new Pretzel M & M’s.
Packaging The all new Pretzel M & M’s are packaged in the same type of wrapper that most other varieties are packaged in, except the color of the Pretzel package is a vibrant and appealing shade of blue. The front label of the package features an illustration of one of the lovable M & M’s characters holding what appears to be chocolate and a pretzel and the rear label lists all pertinent ingredient and nutritional information.
Overall Rating This new variety of M & M’s chocolate candies is somewhat unique. Judging by the comments that I have heard from customers at CVS Pharmacy, as well as those of various people that I asked to sample them, response to these candies is generally positive. I asked several people to sample the candies and every person who tried them told me that they liked them.
I must be in the minority. I don’t see the appeal of combining chocolate and pretzels and I think that the strange little pretzels in these candies are much too hard. Perhaps, if the pretzels in these M & M’s were softer, I might enjoy eating them more. At any rate, if you are a fan of chocolate and pretzels, chances are, you’ll like Pretzel M & M’s chocolate candies . If you have extensive dental work and / or problem teeth, you might not want to bite down on the pretzels that are located in the center of these candies.
