Panera Bread Potato Chips – Review

Kettle Cooked, Panera, Panera Bread, Sunflower Oil

Salty or sweet, it seems people will favor one or the other as their junk food of choice. For me, it has to be something sweet, and generally of the chocolate variety. But on occasion, I like to indulge in a slightly salty potato chip or two, and if I can get it, I prefer it be a kettle-cooked potato chip.

Kettle cooked chips are those very hard, often folded over, or curled onto itself type of chips I usually find in the HERS or UTZ brands in local stores. I like them because they tend to be much more flavorful in my opinion. They are not too greasy, yet because many of the chips in the bag are folded onto themselves, they seem to hold extra flavor AND have that magnificent crunch! I also like that there is variety as far as some curled, some not, so you can vary how you chose to eat them, placing a single flat one on your tongue and laying it flat or putting a curled one straight on your side back teeth and enjoying a nice big CRUNCH!

Now the only problem with these kettle-cooked chips is that I’ve only been able to find them in the larger sized bags…
Enter Panera Bread! When you get a lunch deal at Panera Bread you can chose, I think, between an apple, a bag of chips, or an extra piece of bread.
Now their chips don’t say that they are ‘kettle cooked’ or hand dipped, but they definitely have that same appeal. They are hard and many of them curled or folded over. Best of all, they come in a small 1 oz sized bag so you couldn’t over indulge even if you wanted to!

Also, Panera Bread maintains an artisan standard that they want to come over in all of their foods, not just their artisan bread. Panera potato chips have no cholesterol, no trans fat and no preservatives, AND they are cooked in 100% sunflower oil! These all natural chips are made solely from potatoes, sunflower oil and sea salt. Each 1 oz bag of approximately 20 chips is only 160 calories, 70 of which come from fat. Not too bad to have on hand for the once in a while potato chip eater!
