Ovaltine Comes Out of Retirement!

Metamucil, Ovaltine

When you hear the word Ovaltine, do you think of your grandmother, or other retired people? For some reason, Ovaltine got labeled as on old person’s drink. It’s lumped right in there with Ben Gay and Metamucil. I am sure you have all heard a few Ovaltine jokes in your days.

I watched with much interest as my young grand daughter passed up the soda and other sugary drinks the other night and grabbed the jar of Ovaltine from the pantry shelf. She made herself a big glass and drank it right down. In fact, most of my family, including my now grown children has always loved Ovaltine. I loved that it is good for them!

Where Did Ovaltine Come From?

An interesting fact is that Ovaltine got its name from a clerical error. Yes, it did not start out as Ovaltine at all. The product was developed in Switzerland back in 1904. Its original name was Ovomaltine, and it was intended as a sort of endurance and recovery drink for the many skiers of the area. The drink grew so much in popularity, the makers decided to go global.

Customs made a slight boo-boo on the paper work and Ovomaltine became Ovaltine! Villa Park, Illinois began producing the drink in 1915 and the rest is history. It began as a well loved drink of adults and kids, but how it got to be an old person’s drink is anyone’s guess. Perhaps because of the high nutritional value, or just because older folks new it was better for them than other chocolaty drinks.
