Mythbusters Theme Party

Mythbusters, Party Menu, Pop Rocks

The hit Discovery Channel series, Mythbusters, can be the inspiration behind a fun and unique party. Let me give you a few ideas to help you create your own Myth Busting event.

Invitations

On the show, the myths are planned and illustrated on blueprint paper. Design your own invitations by using dark blue paper or card stock handwritten with a silver paint pen or gel pen. Ask your invited guests to RSVP in true myth busting terminology by responding with either “plausible” for maybe, “confirmed” for yes, and “busted” for no.

Decorations

Decorate using elements from the show. Get creative. Let your favorite myth be represented in some way within your decorating scheme. Items can include a crash test dummy, caution tape, signs that read “Blast Zone”, traffic cones, fire extinguishers, plastic sharks, boxes labeled TNT, mock bullet proof panels made from plexiglass, walruses, ducks or a number of other options.

Seating for your party can be lawn chairs with helium balloons or faux rocket packs attached to their backs.

Refreshments

Serve your guests their drinks in glass test tubes. Clean squares of diamond plate metal can be used for serving trays. Decorate napkins with the yellow and black radioactive symbol. Remember the buttered toast myth? Appetizers can be herb and Parmesan toast points. Serve cake in the shape of a great white shark to commemorate all your favorite shark myths. Lemon poppy seed muffins are another snack idea. Use a superhero shaped cake pan as a mold for pineapple gelatin. (Think ballistics gel.) Also try to incorporate non-dairy creamer and canned biscuits into your party menu.

Games

No myth busting party would be complete without a few myths to bust and experiments to try. Let participants divide into two teams – the “Jamie” team and the “Adam” team. Create challenges that can be accomplished or tested with minimal time and effort. Of course you could re-create the “Diet Coke and Mentos” rocket and see which team’s “explosion” is more phenomenal. Initiate an egg drop challenge requiring each team to drop an egg safely from 10 feet using only duct tape and a paper cone. Charge the teams with creating a “weapon” that will pop a balloon using only a rubber band and a newspaper.

See if your teams can find a needle (or toothpick) in a haystack. Can they pop popcorn using their cell phones? Can they cook an egg by placing it between two ringing cell phones? Who can be the first to tear apart a phone book? Can they construct a jail cell out of duct tape strong enough to keep the rival team behind bars? (Don’t forget to provide the incarcerated teams with a few benign tools for escape. Tools can include a plastic comb, vinegar, and sand.)

Party Favors

Give your guests something to remember the fun. Nose glasses with mustaches and black berets can remind your friends of their favorite myth-busting characters from the show. Pop rocks and jaw breakers are also sweet ideas for party treats. And last but not least, say goodbye to your myth busting fanatics with a complimentary bottle of syrup. They may want to swim in it later.
