In my home daycare, I have a child who has Aspergers Syndrome, which is a high functioning form of autism. This child is also very over weight, and his parents and I have been working together to help control both his weight and his hyperactivity. Because I am a licensed daycare provider, I qualify to participate in a USDA Food Program, but this program has limited options on foods that I can serve for breakfast. The children must be served a bread (pancakes, toast, bagels, cereal, oatmeal, etc), a fruit or fruit juice, and milk. Breads are carbohydrates, which break down into sugar, and fruits and juices also contain a fair amount of natural sugars, or fructose.

This childs parents purchased a few specialty foods that I have on hand, and I supplement his breakfasts with these foods. One of the products that I have been highly impressed with is a Super High Protein Powder, made my MLO.

Description

MLO Super High Protein Powder comes in a 16 ounce cardboard canister, similar to a container of dry oats, with a tightly sealed plastic lid. It is labeled and marketed as a “sports nutrition” product, but does not have to be used exclusively in this way. The back of the package says that MLO Super High Protein is packed with protein and nutrients! Just one shake provides at least 35% of the daily recommended values for many essential vitamins, plus an array of important B complex vitamins and rare minerals.

The powder is light beige in color, with a sweet smell. It warns not to use this product for weight reduction. The container holds 16 servings.

It also provides the following vitamins: A, C, Calcium, Iron, E, Thiamine, Riboflavin, Niacin, B6, B12, Biotin, Pantothenic Acid, Phosphorus, Iodine, Magnesium, Zinc, Selenium, Copper, Manganese, Chromium, and Molybdenum.

Our Experience

This child is on a special medication, which has the side effect of appetite suppression. There are mornings when he simply does not have any desire to eat breakfast, and getting him the protein his body needs is indeed one of our concerns. The first time I used this MLO Super High Protein Powder I wasn’t sure what this boys reaction would be because he is a bit fussy with the foods he’ll eat. This seems to blend well with a variety of cereals, both cold and hot, and the flavor of the protein powder is not overwhelming.

He wanted me to mix it into his milk that we served with his cold cereal, and he actually enjoyed it. Now he asks me to use this protein powder all the time. The back of the package has a recipe for a Blueberry Blast Shake, which calls for 1 cup of blueberries, 1/4 cup skim milk, 3/4 cup plain or vanilla low fat yogurt, 4 tablespoons of the MLO andd 3/4 of a teaspoon of vanilla extract. This is delicious! I have frozen blueberries and raspberries in my freezer, and this is a good way to use them up. The shakes are very good, and this child really does enjoy his MLO Super High Protein Powder. It has seemed to help him mentally as well, as he is less rambunctious.

This protein powder is very versatile in that you can add it to meals while baking, or you can simply sprinkle it on salads. What impressed me the most about this protein powder is that there are zero sugars and only 1 gram of fat, yet it provides a huge amount of protein with 24 grams! This was purchased at Fred Meyer stores in the nutrition center, and retails for only $11.00, which seems like a pretty good buy.

If you can’t find it in your area, you can go to the MLO or other websites and place your order.
