Great Summer Camps in Rhode Island

Canoing, Overnight Camp, Sailing

Rhode Island enjoys its nickname the Ocean State, especially in summer when vacationers from around New England and further afield make their way to Rhode Island’s sparkling shores to enjoy sailing, swimming, fishing and boating. Of course Rhode Islanders themselves enjoy their magnificent coast line too. The many camps that dot the state, of course, are not all located on the ocean but some, including these three, make use of these facilities just the same to the delight of the campers.

Camp Hoffman – Located in West Kingston, Rhode Island Camp Hoffman is one of several Girls Scout camps offered to girls across the state for summertime recreation. Camp Hoffman is located on Larkin Pond and is a wonderful combination of pine woods, open grassland, shoreline and hiking trails.

The camp is, of course limited to girls only and because it is an overnight camp, Camp Hoffman restricts its participants to girls who are entering grades 2-12. Those attending can select from programs that just give a taste of the overnight experience and last for three days or they can opt for more extended stays and programs that last one week or eleven days.

Whatever the time frame, the camping and recreational opportunities are considerable. Campers stay in either enclosed lodges, platform tents or select more primitive tent camping. The nearness of Larkin Pond opens up opportunities for swimming lessons and canoing sorties. The fields are perfect for outdoor sports and games. There are bike trails nearby and some campers will determine to take the scenic route from West Kingston to Wakefield , RI.

Edgewood Sailing School Don’t let the name fool you. This is no place to learn reading and math and sail a little bit. . Edgewood Sailing School is a summer time operation that is far from a traditional multi sport summer camp. Edgewood Sailing School has its focus squarely set on teaching young people how to sail a boat, in some cases even their own boat.

Edgewood is located in Cranston, RI and makes use of its neighbor, Narragansett Bay, to provide a sort of “practice area” for young sailors in training. The Edgewood Sailing School isn’t just about sailing, it’s primarily about safe sailing. To this end it makes certain that all its young participants have demonstrated adequate swimming skills to be involved in deep water boating. They also insist that all attendees wear up to date and well repaired life jackets.

Students are divided for instructional purposes by age, size, ability and experience and supervision is continuous.
Beginners programs run for the entire day and students stay involved in sailing and bay based activities from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. More specialized half day formats are provided for those who are skilled enough to begin to learn racing skills and more intricate sailing moves.
