Kung Pao Bistro: Studio City, CA

3 Musketeers, Bbq Pork, Egg Drop Soup, Ventura Blvd

While there is no other Chinese food in my book outside of Sammy’s Noodle Shop, that may be just because I’m a loyal guy. I like what I like and until I find something better, what I like is the standard. Sammy’s Noodle’s are great but while reconnecting with some friends from back east, we dined at Kung Pao Bistro in Studio City. For folks who really know Los Angeles, they know that there are two different Chinese restaurants on Ventura Blvd; Kung Pao China Bistro and Kung Pao Bistro (which was the one we went to). I am pretty sure they’re different locations as they both have satellite locations and they both have different websites. Be that as it may, I had to give Kung Pao Bistro a shot; for two reasons; one because the guy who introduced me to Sammy’s Noodles was the same on taking me to Kung Pao, and also because I didn’t live in New York City anymore; I need to get over it. So that was how I came to know Kung Pao Bistro in Studio City.

Kung Pao Bistro is not your average greasy Chinese food restaurant. In fact, even though the exterior sign may appear a little in disrepair, Kung Pao Bistro prides themselves on being “authentic” and “health-consciously prepared gourmet Chinese food made with quality ingredients.” So Kung Pao Bistro represents that style of living quite well.

The food is the thing at Kung Pao Bistro; while it is no Sammy’s, it was still pretty good. With dishes like Szechwan Hot Garlic Shrimp, Cashew Nut Chicken, Mongolian Beef, and BBQ Pork w/Snow Peas, there is something for every appetite. Kung Pao Bistro also has the more classic favorites like Sweet & Sour Chicken, Egg Drop Soup, and Vegetable Dumplings. When my wife and I were there with our two friends, we got a whole bunch of different selections and shared.

Kung Pao Bistro also serves lunch specials available on weekdays from 11 – 3. The Kung Pao Bistro lunch specials menu includes soup of the day, egg roll, rice, and an entrée. Entrees served on the Kung Pao Bistro lunch menu come with six, seven, eight, and nine dollar price points. These Kung Pao lunch specials include vegetable lo mien, orange tofu, basil chicken, ginger garlic chicken, string beans with chicken, Mongolian lamb, pepper beef, BBQ pork with broccoli, shrimp chop suey, or their signature dish Kung Pao 3 Musketeers (beef, chicken, shrimp, scallions, dry chili, peanuts, sweet & spicy sauce).

The food at Kung Pao Bistro is pretty good, but I’m not totally persuaded. I guess my standards are pretty high. If you’re in Studio City and you know of no others; Kung Pao Bistro should do you fine. But when only the best will do…the search continues…
