Many people do not know the proper way to leave a job. Often times, they do not give their current employer two weeks notice that they will be leaving. The way that most people leave their current job is that they walk up to the boss and say that they quit and leave. This is not a good way to leave any job. By doing this, many people burn bridges that they later find out they need to get their next job. No matter how much you do not like your current job, there is a proper way to leave it. The best and most commonly accepted way to leave a job is by turning in a letter of resignation. A resignation letter is easy to write and will make it much easier to obtain your next job.

Step One

Address the resignation letter to your boss or the head of the company that you work for. You have been working for this job for a while and owe them the gratitude of addressing the resignation letter to the person who has overseen your work. Using to whom it may concern is just rude and not the right foot that you want to leave your job on.

Step Two

Thank your job for employing you in the resignation letter. Tell them that you have learned a lot in the short time that you have worked for them. You may even want to talk about what they have meant for your career.

Step Three

State that at this time you will need to leave this job. You do not need to give specifics about where you are going or whom you will be working for. If you would like to mention something, you can say that you have been given a better opportunity with another company that you could not refuse.

Step Four

Tell your current job when the last day you will be working for them is. This is very important so that there is no confusion about when you are leaving the company. The date should be at least two weeks from the day that you will be turning in the resignation letter to your job. Some companies have policies that you must give more notice when you plan to leave them. Follow the guidelines of the job you are leaving in regards to this part of the resignation letter.

Step Five

Sign and date the resignation letter. You will want to turn in the resignation letter to your boss within 48 hours of writing it. This will help the resignation letter to seem more professional.
