How To: Nicole Richie’s Bun and Straight Bangs

Bangs, Straightening Iron

Nicole Richie is often photographed with her signature style of a bun and straight bangs. One of the great things about this style is that is translates very well with jeans and a casual top, as well as a dress and heels.

This style can be achieved with either a low or a high bun, it’s simply a matter of preference. A high bun gives a more carefree, ballet appearance, while a low bun is more sophisticated and demure. I like to place my bun low close to my neck, and pouf out the hair around the crown of my head for extra volume. However, scarves and shirts with collars can interfere with low buns, making them messy, so be sure to consider what you’ll be wearing before deciding on your placement.

To style your bangs, start working with them while they are still damp. Comb them in place and position your blow dryer above your head, pointing down so that the draft of air will be blowing downwards. If your hair is curly or very textured, you may want to use a smoothing serum or balm before you blow dry, because you want your bangs to appear very sleek. Next, heat your straightening iron to the lowest heat option. Because your bangs are so close to your face and your eyes, you don’t want to risk damaging them. Grab a section of your bangs, about 1/3, and iron them up, out, and around. This will create lift and fullness to your bangs, without actually curling them. Continue on the remain sections and do any touch ups needed to make sure all the sections blend. Next, finish with a light mist of hairspray. If you spray too much your bangs can become weighted down and dull.

When you wear your bangs straight across, it’s important to properly accent your brows and eyes so that they don’t get out staged. Pencil in your brows with a color just a shade lighter than the color of your brows. Nicole often wears a smoky eye with her bangs, so try lining your eyes with a soft Kohl liner, and smudge just enough to create a smoky effect.

Enjoy this ultra chic look, and I wish you the best in all of your beauty endeavors!
