How to Make Your Own Hand Dipped Candles

Making hand dipped candles can be a fun activity that you can do with children. Children love to be creative and they love to spend quality time with an adult. Making hand dipped candles with children is a creative time to spend together. Dipped candles are fun to do with children but you have to be very careful and watch your children closely since the wax is hot when you dip candle and the hot wax can burn. You have to be very careful that the wax does not tip over and you have to watch the children so that they don’t touch the hot wax

To make hand dipped candles you will need a deep container made of metal such as a metal coffee can. The container that you use has to be deep so you can dip a wick into hot wax in the deep can. The can should be at least eight inches deep to make a six or seven inch long candle.

You will also need some wax to use to make the dipped candles out of. You can buy wax at a craft store. If you can get some bees wax then you can make hand dipped bees wax candles. Hand dipped bees wax candles have a delightful smell like honey. Hand dipped bees wax candles will burn faster then hand dipped wax candles.

You will also need some wicking to use to dip and to burn the candles you can get candle wicking at a craft store.

When you get the deep can, the wax and the candle wicking you are ready to make your hand dipped candles. You will also need a place to hang the candles to dry in between dippings and a pan that has water in it to put the deep can in to melt the wax. It is a good idea to make hand dipped candles in an area that can be dripped on with wax because making hand dipped candles can be very messy.

Start making hand dipped candles by putting your wax into your deep can. Put the deep can with the wax in it in a pan with about an inch of water in it and then place the pan of water and wax on a burner, outdoor fire or hot plate to melt. It may take awhile for the wax to melt. Watch the melting wax carefully to be sure it doesn’t start a fire or hurt anyone.

When the wax in the deep can is all melted then put the deep can of melted wax in a place that children can reach yet not get burned or hurt. Then give the child a piece of candle wicking that is a good six inches longer then the can of melted wax. Carefully let the child dip the wick into the hot wax but be sure the child does not touch anything hot at any time. Then the wick should be allowed to cool for about a minute and then the wick can be dipped again. Then repeat the dipping of the wick. It will take several dippings before the wick turns into a candle. As the wick is dipped again and again the wax will develop thicker and thicker on the wick until it is thick enough to be a candle.

When you dip the wick into the hot wax don’t move too fast and don’t move too slow or the wax will not develop properly on the wick. You will be able to see how it is working as you dip the wick. You may have to reheat the wax at times so the wax stays melted through the process. It can take a long time to make hand dipped candles so you must be patient when making hand dipped candles.

When you make hand dipped candles you have to use caution and always be very careful around hot wax. Hot wax can burn so don’t let the hot wax touch any skin on any one. It is important to be very careful when making hand dipped candles.
